Summer Season EOI Re-open - limited spots available!
Embers is a growing community championing women in basketball in Western Sydney.
More than a basketball club, we are a community who mutually support, encourage and challenge each other on and off the court.
The three pillars of Embers are:
BASKETBALL
Championing women in basketball, training and development
COMMUNITY
Building community through friendship, teamwork and service
FAITH
Fostering a culture of prayer, support and hope
Our aim is to provide a safe space for women to explore, develop, participate in the sport of basketball, no matter what their experience, skill level, history or background. We do this by providing women with opportunities to participate in local social-based competitions and to develop their skills through regular training.
Building up women's basketball skills and developing good health and fitness is one of our highest priorities. We build this through regular Coach led training sessions throughout the season (weekly or fortnightly - depending on the season). Training is a KEY part of our culture and is built into the program of anyone who signs up to Embers.
Community is built through friendship, teamwork and service. Our social events are often just as important as our training sessions. We believe a strong basketball team is one of great trust and communication, and this is built through deepened friendships.
Team work is also an important part of Embers culture and everybody contributes in different ways on a volunteer basis with roles ranging from very little commitment to a lot.
Faith is an element that Embers was founded upon and continues to play an important part in the lives of many players within Embers.
However, Embers welcomes all women, regardless of their personal beliefs, and all are free to participate and be a valued member of our community. Whether you are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, agnostic/unsure or a non-believer, you are most welcome here.
Faith is embedded in our culture simply through the value of prayer.
Before and after games, a brief prayer (<60 secs) is shared together as a team, and this is a valued part of our culture. If players are comfortable, they are invited to lead this brief prayer (structured or spontaneous), organised through a rotating prayer roster.
Most commonly, prayers based on Christian foundations are shared, however, we welcome players to share a prayer of their own faith, if they choose to.
During these times of prayer, we hope that all players gather with their team, and ask that all players show respect and reverence, no matter what their faith background is.
Example of a prayer before a game:
God, we ask Your blessing on each of us today.
We thank You for our teammates next to us
and for the ability to play this game we enjoy.
Help each of us:
To have confidence in our ability,
and to try our best.
We ask that no one from either team be
injured and that the spirit of sportsmanship may
prevail before, during and after the game.
Amen.
In 2013, nine young women were moving into a new stage in their lives where community was hard to find outside of the routine of activities that come with being young: school/university, youth group, etc., on top of adjusting to working and family lives. They shared a common interest in basketball and decided to form a team through which they could continue to journey together in faith.
They chose the name Embers, inspired to be like “little embers in an often darkened world.”
That 'ember' of a small, simple idea has inflamed into a growing community of people who mutually support, encourage and challenge one another on and off the court.
