The current governing party is the SDP/PSD, who also hold the Presidency and four of the seven cantonal governments.
They were founded as a successor to the Republican Socialists in 1906, with all 67 of their deputies and 14 out of their 16 senators defecting before the prior party was disbanded in 1908. They were first elected to both government and the Presidency in 1920. They have had five presidents and nine prime ministers, amounting to 55 years (and counting) of SDP/PSD presidency.
Conservative Alliance Party of Elsongia

The largest opposition party is the Tories. They were last in government from 2010-2020. They also hold two of the seven cantonal governments.
Their modern incarnation was created in 1959, but their immediate predecessors that shared a name with them stretch back to the 1825 election. They were generally regarded as an independent continuation of the Tory Party (now the Conservatives) in the United Kingdom. There have been nine Tory presidents and eight Tory prime ministers (one of which served two non-consecutive terms), amounting to 35 years of Tory presidency.

The second largest party in opposition is the Libérals. They always use an "é" with a French acute accent for their name, even in English. They hold one of the seven cantonal governments. They are currently in a communicative relationship with the SDP/PSD governing coalition.
They trace themselves directly back to 1825, where they endorsed His Excellency the First President James Blanc. They were seen as one of the most powerful parties nationally until the 1970s. There have been seven Libéral presidents and nine Libéral prime ministers, amounting to 55 years of leadership.
Progressive Party of Elsongia

The @progressives (or simply Progressives) are a party dedicated to progressive ideas, especially equality among various groups. They are currently in coalition with the SDP/PSD, particularly relating to the passage of laws in the Cantonal House.
They were founded in 1971 as the 'Parti français' to protest discriminatory factions in the main parties at the time. They first got elected to Parliament in the 1973 Chamblin Southeast by-election. They have never had a prime minister or a president.
