Electromagnetic and Light Scattering XXII

The 22nd International Conference on Electromagnetic and Light Scattering (ELS XXII) will be held on January 10–15, 2027, in Saariselkä, Finland, one of the northernmost conference destinations in Europe. Located in the heart of Finnish Lapland and surrounded by the pristine wilderness of Urho Kekkonen National Park, Saariselkä provides a unique Arctic setting for scientific exchange and collaboration.

ELS XXII will bring together researchers from around the world to discuss the latest theoretical, computational, and experimental advances in electromagnetic and light scattering by particles of arbitrary size, shape, composition, and internal structure. The conference will provide an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging ideas, presenting new results, and fostering collaborations across a broad range of scientific disciplines.

Contributions will cover a wide spectrum of topics, including atmospheric and planetary sciences, astrophysics, remote sensing, particle characterization, optical manipulation, nanophotonics, and biomedical applications.

The conference topics include, but are not limited to:

• New theoretical developments, numerical methods, and laboratory measurements of electromagnetic and light scattering by nonspherical and morphologically complex particles and particle aggregates.

• Detection and characterization of atmospheric aerosols, clouds, and other particulate matter using laboratory, in situ, and remote sensing techniques.

• Light scattering by terrestrial aerosols, oceanic particulates, planetary regoliths, comets, asteroids, exoplanets, circumstellar disks, and other astrophysical environments.

• Polarimetric, spectroscopic, and hyperspectral remote sensing of natural and engineered materials.

• Applications of light scattering in biology, biomedicine, environmental monitoring, and material science.

• Near-field phenomena, coherent scattering effects, optical trapping, structured light, and optical manipulation.

• Nanophotonics, metamaterials, photonic structures, and emerging technological applications of electromagnetic scattering.

History of the conference series: The series has had a triple start in Amsterdam (1995), Bremen (1996), and Helsinki (1997). Before the second time in Finland at ELS XII in Helsinki (2010), it continued in New York (1998), Vigo (1999), Halifax (2000), Gainesville (2002), Bremen (2003), Salobrena (2005), St. Petersburg (2006), Bodrum (2007), and Hatfield (2008). After 2010, the series has been organized in Taormina (2011), Lille (2013), Leipzig (2015), College Park (2017), College Station (2018), Hangzhou (2019), St. Petersburg (2021, on-line), Almuñecar (2023), Milazzo (2025), and now it is coming back to Finland for the third time.
