I recently tried to set up emacs for python development following the "Emacs: The Best Python Editor?" article on the RealPython website and I installed the elpy package. However there appear to be some issues with it. I am not at all familiar with how exactly emacs runs under the hood, and have pretty much used it only as a basic editor before, due to this I have no idea what exactly the issue is, but when I open the configuration page for the elpy module I see these warning (below). What is the issue exactly here, did I mess something up when installing the package (I just used the list-packages and installed it from there):

So I added the line (setq elpy-rpc-virtualenv-path 'current) in my ~/.emacs.d/init.el file. That solved the problem "temporarily" as it said. The permanent solution is to install virtualenv via package manager. For Ubuntu and other debian-based Linux distro, it is easy: sudo apt install virtualenv.

It appears communication with elpy-rpc has broken down, and it constantly beeps whenever it is supposed to offer auto-complete suggestions, etc, elpy is now unusable for me as I cannot type a single word without it constantly complaining.

While conducting regular analysis of malware samples submitted to VirusTotal, we discovered a ransomware variant dubbed Elpy. It belongs to the Phobos family and is designed to encrypt files, modify filenames, and provide two ransom notes. Elpy appends the victim's ID, ambu.lance@tuta.io email address, and ".elpy" extension to filenames.

For instance, it renames "1.jpg" to "1.jpg.id[9ECFA84E-3352].[ambu.lance@tuta.io].elpy", "2.png" to "2.png.id[9ECFA84E-3352].[ambu.lance@tuta.io].elpy", and so forth. The ransom notes created by Elpy are named "info.txt" and "info.hta".

Going into this, I knew absolutely nothing about language servers. ButI knew which elpy features I enjoyed using, and I had a vague sense ofwhat capabilities other IDEs have (based on people questioning why Iuse Emacs when VS Code exists). So I hoped to achieve functionalityincluding, sorted approximately descendingly on priority:

How is this helpful? Well, it shows you the anagrams of elpy scrambled in different ways and helps you recognize the set of letters more easily. It will help you the next time these letters, E L P Y come up in a word scramble game.

If you use elpy and ob-ipython together and use the jupyter option when configuring the elpy interpreter settings it will break the execution of ob-ipython code blocks, so use the ipython version instead. In other words use this in your init.el file:

If you go to the elpy documentation (elpy is a mode for emacs that makes editing python much easier), there is a section on setting up which interpreter to use - and if you're wondering why I'm suddenly talking about elpy instead of ob-ipython, well, it's because it was the problem (or at least using them together was the problem).

This documents a problem that I ran into wherein the elpy settings I used broke the execution of code blocks by ob-ipython . Just remember to use ipython instead of jupyter and it should be okay. Another day of my life lost to troubleshooting (well, not a whole day, but too much).

By default, elpy uses a syntax-checking package called flymake. While flymake is built into Emacs, it only has native support four languages, and it requires significant effort to be able to support new languages.

Hi, I need to work with long python files, with long docstings and I wanted to use folding to manage this. I think that the default fold in my init.el does not work for docstrings. I found this reddit discusion recomending elpy. e24fc04721
