The study area for this project is the North Bottomlands area of the Howard Buford Recreation Area (HBRA), located southeast of Eugene and south of Springfield, below the Coast Fork of the Willamette River. While HBRA is protected land that supports conservation efforts, its primary objective is to accommodate recreation. The site is especially popular for human-dog recreation. The North Bottomlands trail system leads to a series of maintained fields and meadows where off-leash dog activity is common. One such area, Coyote Meadow, is of key interest to this project due to high coyote activity located on the northern edge. To reduce conflict between denning coyotes and human visitors with their dogs, Coyote Meadow undergoes annual closures from early April to late June. Visitor surveys included questions about experiences and attitudes related to this closure.
