That assumes that you have a kde.desktop file in the xsessions directory, I don't use KDE so I can't check but it works for me using cinnamon or xfce. Once you have made that change, you should be logged in to KDE by default every time.
Commented out, you can see the commands to start unity (ubuntu session) and unity 2d.You only need to comment out xfce command and add the command to start Cinnamon (I didn't give it because I don't know how to start it manually).
Obs: I agree with you xrdp works better than others remote desktop viewers I tried and it works very well with xfce. I use it from other linux machines too with Remmina client.To use it with xfce, you need to install xubuntu-desktop (sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop)
You can change the default icon theme of Xfce. The xfce-look.org provides hundreds of GTK themes and icons. Download your favourite icon theme, and extract them. Then copy the top icon theme folder to /usr/share/icons. Or, you can create a folder .icons under your home directory and copy the icons folder.
It is handy when you can just open the application key via the left super key or right super key. To configure the Whisker Menu to launch with the left super key, open Window Manager and go to Keyboard. Add Superkey with xfce4-whisker-menu and press ok. 5376163bf9
