John James (J.J.) Elliott (born 1/12/1877 died 21/1/1949) married Mary (Molly) Carty (born 17/4/1892 died 17/11/1931) on 25/6/1919.

John Elliott was baptised on 2.12.1877 in parish of Kilkenny West (Alternative parish names Benown, Glasson, Kilkenny West, Benown, and Nohill, Nohill, Tubberclaire)

J.J. Elliott landed in Minneapolis 28/4/1900, left Minneapolis for Ireland 12/1/1904 , returned 5/5/1904, & left Minneapolis for home on 5/3/1907. John J. Elliott became a citizen of the United States of America on 5/9/1900. John J Elliott aged 27 in 1905 US Census. Minneapolis, Ward Number: 11, Hennepin, Minnesota.

J.J. and Molly Elliott lived in the teacher's residence in Tubberclair from 1920 to 1927.

In the newspaper account of J.J.'s death, it is said that he was President of the Parish Court during its existence and that he was appointed Peace Commissionner by P.J. Ruttledge, Minister for Justice after independence.

Members of the Athlone Brigade IRA’s 2nd Battalion

John J. Elliott in the Athlone Brigade of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (1917-1922)

John James (JJ) Elliott became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (Athlone Centre) February 1917 and became a volunteer in July, 1918. He joined "C" (Tubberclair) Company, 2nd Battalion, Athlone Brigade, 1st Midland Division of Oglaigh na hEireann, the Old IRA. He would appear to have organised the collection of funds for Dail Eireann in 1918 (archival information).

December 1920 to July, 1921 John James Elliott was in charge of the Glasson Active Service Unit.

At the commencement of the arbitration courts he acted as Brigade Police Officer.

On 28 February, 1922, John James Elliott enlisted with the National Forces or Defence Forces of Saorstat Eireann at Athlone where he held the position of Brigade Police Officer with responsibility for Intelligence duties. He was discharged on 16 September 1922 in the rank of Captain.

The titles and numbers of battalions changed between 11 July 1921 (signing of the Truce) and 1 July 1922 (outbreak of Civil War).

John James Elliott was awarded the Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar for his services during the War of Independence.

John James Elliott was awarded a Military Service Pension under the provisions of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924 for his services during the War of Independence.



Shortly after the Easter Week Rising 1916, JJ Elliott was arrested and imprisoned (prisoner of war) in Richmond Barracks, Dublin (9th to 20th May 1916).
