Dry eye disease is a complex condition with many possible causes. Some people don't produce enough tears, while others produce enough tears but lose them too quickly because the tear film is unstable or the oily layer isn't working properly.

Heat, debridement and meibomian gland expression

The Dry Eye Spa is designed to treat blocked or poorly functioning meibomian glands.
Treatment begins with gentle heat to warm and soften the oils within the glands. This can be provided using Blephasteam or a single-use heated pad. The eyelid margins are then carefully cleaned and any debris is removed before the meibomian glands are gently expressed to help release thickened or stagnant oils.

Professional eyelid and lash-line cleaning

BlephEX is an in-practice treatment that provides a thorough clean of the eyelid margins and eyelashes.
A specialised device is used to gently remove accumulated debris, bacteria, oils and other material from the lash line and around the openings of the meibomian glands.

Blephacalm combines heat treatment with deep cleansing of the eyelids and eyelashes.
The treatment uses a specialist miticidal cleansing gel to thoroughly clean the lash roots and eyelid margins.
It can be particularly useful for patients with Demodex blepharitis, where microscopic Demodex mites can live around the eyelashes and contribute to eyelid inflammation and irritation.

Helping your natural tears stay on the eye for longer

Punctum plugs are tiny devices inserted into the puncta, the small drainage openings at the inner corners of your eyelids.
Normally, tears drain away through these openings into the nose. Punctum plugs partially or completely block this drainage pathway, allowing your natural tears to remain on the surface of the eye for longer.

Your tears normally drain from the eye through tiny channels into the nose. If these drainage pathways become narrowed or blocked, this can cause problems such as watering, discomfort or recurrent discharge.
Lacrimal drainage irrigation involves gently introducing sterile fluid into the tear drainage system to assess whether it is open and functioning normally.

Long-lasting lubrication within the tear drainage system

Lacrifill is a canalicular gel designed to provide a temporary barrier within the tear drainage system.
Rather than using a solid punctal plug, the gel is placed within the canalicular system, helping to reduce the drainage of tears from the eye.
Amniotic Membrane Contact Lenses
Advanced treatment to support the healing of the ocular surface

An amniotic membrane contact lens is a specialist treatment used for significant ocular surface disease and corneal epithelial problems.
The amniotic membrane contains naturally occurring biological factors that can support the healing environment of the ocular surface. It is placed over the eye and held in position using a specialist contact lens.
