College Prep Biology
Course Description
C.P Biology 2020-2021
CP Biology is a course designed to cover the biochemical, cellular, genetic, ecological, botanical, and zoological aspects of biology with emphasis on laboratory techniques. The appropriate NJ State Standards will be addressed so as to raise the level of students discourse and develop essential scientific reasoning skills. The topics include:
Unit 1: Cell Specialization and Homeostasis
Introduction to cells
Cell parts
DNA, Genes & Proteins
Hierarchy of Life
Body Systems
Cell Division
Unit 2: Genetics
Mitosis
Meiosis
Mendelian Genetics
Unit 3: Natural Selection & Evolution
Natural Selection
Artificial Selection
Adaptations in a population
Evidence of evolution
Common ancestry
Charles Darwin
Unit 4: Ecology
Photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration
Biogeochemical Cycles
Ecosystems
Biotic & Abiotic Factors
Tropic Levels
Food Chains
Food Webs
Unit 5: Human Impact
Ozone Depletion
Global Warming
Overpopulation
Over Hunting
Lack of Resources
Ocean Acidification
Due to the nature of Biology, there are many hands-on labs activities and lab research papers. In many situations students will work together in groups of 2-6. Students will go perform labs to see how cells control what enters and exits, extract DNA from bananas, create paper birds and mimic evolution as well as discover biotic and abiotic factors outside plus much more! In each scenario we will focus on the skills needed in the workplace, namely safety, teamwork innovation, negotiation, and problem solving.
