My family moved to Seneca when I was in fifth grade. Moving from Kansas City to the small town of Seneca was a huge change for me, however, it turned out to be an amazing thing. After we moved, my mom quit her job at the hospital and has had more time to spend at home with us, and that has made her and I extremely close. Moving to Seneca has also brought us closer to some of our other family, which allows us to do things such as go over and watch a football game with them.
Moving also gave me the opportunity to go to a small high school, where I flourished. I am a little bit shy, so going to a school where I know almost everyone made each day easier. Through the opportunities I was given at Nemaha Central, I have become a better leader. I was asked to join the KAY board my freshman year, which took a lot of time and responsibility. Through KAY, I learned to manage groups of people and to delegate tasks. I also become class secretary for four years and became NHS secretary my senior year. I also became captain of both my cheer team and my dance team, which helped me learn to mediate conflict and communicate with people.
Moving gave me another opportunity that I never would have had in the city. Because we moved, I was able to start dancing competitively, along with my sister Kailey. Competitive dance in big cities requires a much bigger time and monetary commitment than Little Steps does, so we were able to do it. I have been dancing at the studio for ten years, and it has become a second home to me, and all the people I dance with, a second family.
My very first job was at the elementary school. I helped two hours a week in the morning at the STEAM club, teaching kids to work on engineering and robotics projects. I loved that job. I also got an afterschool job at Medical Arts Pharmacy as a clerk, where I currently work. However, after the first year, they switched the STEAM club to the afternoon, so I had to give it up so I could continue my job at the pharmacy. Later in high school, I picked up another job at the dance studio, helping with a couple of the classes.
Between the STEAM club and the studio, I learned how much I loved working with and teaching children. After that, I started to talk to some teachers and do some job shadows and explore the teaching field a little more. That is when I decided I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. I became a teacher aid my senior year for a fourth-grade teacher and I was able to watch her teach every other day, which was helpful. I also noticed how many students in the school did not speak fluent English, and, after some research, decided to get my master’s degree in English as a Second Language so that I could help those students to feel included.
After I graduate high school, I plan to attend the University of Nebraska- Lincoln to get my bachelor’s degree in Elementary education, which will take me three years. During those three years, I plan to spend some time studying abroad, although I am not sure where yet. After I complete my bachelor’s degree, I will spend my fourth year obtaining my master’s degree in English as a Second Language. After I graduate, I would like to come back and teach near Seneca and near my family.
I am very excited about all the opportunities that my future holds and all the possibilities there are ahead of me. While I may not know exactly what is going to happen yet, exactly where I will end up, I know that I will be able to make a difference in someone’s life.
