Students will be paired with another student in a reciprocal designer-client relationship. Each student is to design a structure that reflects how their client is made in the image of God. The studio, retreat, shack, cabin, or pavilion will contain spaces in which the client can pursue the activities that reflect specific characteristics of God. At least one space must be private, while another must be more public or social.
Attention should be paid to the public and private nature of different spaces and the transition from the outside world of distraction to the inner sanctum of focused pursuit. Each project must address the threshold between exterior and interior, which should be conceived in three dimensions.
Care must be taken to integrate the architecture with the site, which may be achieved by altering the topography, adding or removing vegetation, or creating new exterior spaces, formal or naturalistic. The site, like the building, is three-dimensional, and both should function together to realize the project goals.
Students are paired into groups of four to work together in this project. This project consists of creating a wall section model at 1” scale of a two-story wood frame building. As well as including a foundation and footing. The model should reveal the layers of how a building is constructed (expose drywall, ceiling, floors, etc). Students are allowed to be creative and add features such as flooring, decor, etc.
