Welcome!

My name is Elizabeth Huppert and I am a postdoctoral research fellow at the Dispute Resolution Research Center (DRRC) at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. I earned a PhD in Psychology and Business from the University of Chicago and Booth School of Business in 2022.

I study moral psychology and behavioral ethics with a focus on moral and social value communication.

People frequently violate moral standards, including purposefully choosing to violate one moral value in pursuit of another. Although violating moral standards is common, communicating a willingness to violate standards is not - how do we judge others who admit to having flexible moral standards? How should people and organizations communicate their moral and social beliefs with the knowledge that violating professed standards is often inevitable, and even at times, valued?

I examine these questions to understand how perceptions of moral nuance and hypocrisy influence a range of behaviors, such as desire to join organizations, belongingness in organizations, support for political leaders, and interpersonal trust.

By drawing on diverse theories and methods from organizational behavior, behavioral economics, and social and developmental psychology, I consider how people develop flexible intuitions about moral beliefs and the reputational consequences of communicating moral flexibility.
