WONDERFUL! YOU ARE GOING TO PARIS!
Hi there!
So, you are going to Paris and now you want to know EVERYTHING there is to know about the city of love and lights. While there is tons of information to be found on the internet already, of course, sometimes it is hard to know WHERE to find it. Or to know it even exists! So I have compiled this PARIS DIRECTORY for you.
Is this selection complete? No, by far & of course not! But I'm sure you will find a lot of what you are looking for. And then some ....
The main section of this site is designed as a huge directory; a favorites listing, if you will. I have done the Googling for you, so to speak. It is also intended to give you ideas; to explore further, as you may find things/spots/ideas you had not thought of before. Do more Googling yourself!
I have been going to Paris for over 40 years. And I still have not seen everything. Part due to the fact that I have my favorites, that I go back to often times. But I know my way around the city and I'd like to share that with you.
So, come to Paris with me!
ABOUT THE INFORMATION ON THIS SITE
1 - THE PARIS DIRECTORY | QUICK REFERENCE SECTION
The short and sweet, so to speak. Mostly just links that should speak for themselves. Sometimes there's several links for one subject. Choose the one that appeals to you best, is up to you. This elaborate section is for the explorer in you. I'm not telling you what to do: just sharing my Paris-favorites-list with you.
The section starts with a table of contents. Click on the ▼ to unfold the menu.
In the second section you will find stories and remarks and recommendations from me. There, I will tell you what to do ;-)
2 - MY PERSONAL TAKE ON PARIS & MORE LINKS
My recommendations, stories, insights and personal accounts and preferences. Also with links here and there. Some information is also in the first section, but this info is even more personal.
The section holds several subjects. Click on the ▼ to unfold the contents.
3 - NEED HELP PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP TO PARIS?
All the information on this website is for free, obviously. Also the documents that you can download from the DOCUMENTS section. But if you want or need help preparing for your Paris trip, I can help.
4 - DOCUMENTATION | INFORMATION SHEETS TO DOWNLOAD
Click on DOCUMENTATION in the right upper corner of your screen to access even more information in PDF's that are downloadable for free. (Work in progress)
ELISABETH'S FAVES
Although a lot of what I have listed is a fave in some way, there are listings, addresses, products et cetera that are really, truly, absolute faves and/or super useful. They are marked with a ♥
It goes without saying that they are highly recommended by me.
WHERE ARE YOU ALL FROM?
CURRENT WEATHER IN
PARIS, FRANCE
CONVERTING FROM CELSIUS TO FAHRENHEIT
There are many online converters to look up the exact conversion. Here's a quick shortcut:
0 degrees C = 32F | 5 degrees C = 41F | 10 degrees C = 50F | 15 degrees C = 59F | 20 degrees C = 68F | 25 degrees C = 77F | 30 degrees C = 86F
DISCLAIMER | All images/photo's on this website are mine and copyrighted, unless specified otherwise. Text is mine but will undoubtedly resemble that on other websites because we are all talking (writing) about fixed data most of the time. Where I copy-paste from other websites, you will find a mention of the source and/or a link to the source. If you are one of the sources mentioned and you want your link removed, please contact me. At this point none of the links are affiliated sites, I just included them because I think the info provided there is useful. You should check if the content is still valid before you incorporate suggestions into your itinerary at all times - not just from me and linked-to-websites!
The short and sweet, so to speak. Just links that should speak for themselves. In the second section you will find stories and remarks and recommendations from me. In this QUICK REFERENCE SECTION I have linked to the ENGLISH versions of the websites (if available) but often times you can choose other languages!

ABOUT ARRONDISSEMENTS, QUARTIERS, CODES POSTAL AND FRENCH NUMBERPLATES
The Postal Code (code postal) for the Greater Paris Area is 75000 and then there are the codes 75001 - 75020.
These refer to the arrondissements (districts) in Paris. I have added these often with the links for you to get an idea of where the listing is in Paris and on the map. An arrondissement is often written as ARR.
Each arrondissement has a name. You will not need to know that per sé to be able to navigate the city, but I thought it is a nice-to-know thing. The link refers to Wikipedia for the names and more info on the 20 Parisian arrondissements.
Paris suburbs (banlieues) are 91000 - 94000 | You will probably not need this for your trip to Paris (unless your hotel is just outside the Périphérique) but it's a nice-to-know thing. Liste des Communes de la Métropole du Grand Paris.
Each arrondissement has several quartiers too. Liste des Quartiers by GeneaWiki
Numberplates on French cars reflect the department the owner lives in. So 75 is for Paris and 91-94 is for the Parisian Banlieues.
The twenty arrondissements are arranged in the form of a clockwise spiral (often likened to a snail shell), starting from the middle of the city, with the first on the Right Bank (north bank) of the Seine. In French, notably on street signs, the number is often given in Roman numerals.

FREE MAPS ARE EVERYWHERE
Let me start by saying that there are free maps of Paris "everywhere", once you are in Paris. Most hotels offer a folded map, that often has their information printed on it somewhere.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT/MÉTRO MAPS
The RATP also offers a variety of maps of the subway. You can ask for them at the booth in the métro stations.
There's really small ones (A7 size, folded) that fit in the back pocket of your trousers and the somewhat bigger ones that easily fit in your purse or inside pocket of your coat.
But they are rather small maps. I always use a free RATP for quick reference, but if I want to prepare and investigate, I want a larger map.
FREE APPS FOR PLANNING YOUR ITINERARY
For planning your trip by métro in Paris you can also use the RATP app "Next Stop Paris", by the way. It does not only show you the lines/lignes on a map; you can create your personal itinerary which will provide travel time, transits, walking distances et cetera. You can also use the RATP website ♥ for that.
ONLINE MAPS
There's also a lot of maps to be found online. I think Maps of Paris is a great site. They have Airport Maps, Maps of the arrondisssements (districts), Attractions Maps, Bus Maps, Stores Maps, Munuments, Museums and ... well, you get the picture! Maps on everything.
Downloadable PDF Map of the Métro / RATP | from Sorties du Métro | Easy to read map
BUYING MAPS IN PARIS
I like maps. So of course I always pick up 'all' the free maps that I can get. They make excellent souvenirs too and when I have multiple of the same I give them away to people who are planning their Paris trip.
At home I am always looking at maps extensively when planning my next trip to Paris, but also when I get back, to identify where we have been and/or where I took photo's. And for that, a wide range of maps is available.
In the DOCUMENTATION section you will find more information about the two main maps/books I always use, plus a few others.

Space Invaders! | The 1978 computer game "Space Invaders" was the inspiration for street-artists all over the world to attire buildings with space invader mosaics. There are over 1400 in Paris, but the number keeps changing as people add them and the city (sometimes) takes them away.

The ARAGO signs | Look down! All through the city you will encounter 135 bronze medallions. Together they mark the Paris meridian line. This symbolic line, created in 1994 as a tribute to the famous scientist François Arago, extends for 9 km across the city, from Porte de Montmartre in the north to the Cité Universitare in the south. It runs through the Paris Observatory, the Jardin de Luxembourg and the Louvre, among other places.

Point Zero des Routes de France | Under Louis XV, this symbolic point became the marker from which distances to all other French towns were measured. The slab was added in 1924. Legend has it that if you walk over this point, your footsteps will always bring you back to Paris. | The courtyard of Notre Dame Cathedral, Place Jean-Paul II, 75004 | Metro Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame (Ligne 4 & RER B) or Cité (Ligne 4) Temporarily Closed, as is Notre Dame

Nicolas Stohrer learnt his trade in the kitchens of the King of Poland and later followed his daughter Marie to Versailles when she married Louis XV. After working at the court for 5 years, the pastry-maker opened a shop of his own on Rue Montorgueil. It was here that he invented the Baba au Rhum - Rum Baba. | 51 rue Montorgueil, 75002 | Metro Etienne Marcel (Ligne 4) or Sentier (Ligne 3)

IS IT ANY GOOD?
Paris (Tourist) Attractions. Should you go? Are they any good? As always, the answer is "it depends on who you're asking".
For me Tripadvisor works.
You will get a general idea of how people from all over the world rate anything from the Eiffel Tower, hotels, events and (guided) tours to that tiny restaurant on the corner of your street is like.
See photo's uploaded by Tripadvisor users, especially helpful to see if the food at least looks good, or a hotel looks as advertised. Although bare in mind that a lot of people will especially upload photo's and write (bad) reviews if they are dissatisfied.
You can make an account (it's free) and start adding favorites and things to do. And of course write reviews yourself (and add photo's), once you've been there (and done that)!
And yes, I'm on Tripadvisor, of course!

Paris Hotels and places to stay. Should you pick this one? Is the hotel any good? As always, the answer is "it depends on who you're asking".
For me Tripadvisor works.
You will get a general idea of how people from all over the world rate the hotel you are considering.
See photo's uploaded by Tripadvisor users, especially helpful to see if a hotel (-room) looks as advertised. Although, bare in mind that a lot of people will especially upload photo's and write (bad) reviews if they are dissatisfied.
You can make an account (it's free) and start adding favorites and things to do. And of course write reviews yourself (and add photo's), once you've been there (and done that)!
And yes, I'm on Tripadvisor, of course!

NOTE TO FOREIGN/US USERS WANTING TO OBTAIN ONLINE TICKETS OR RESERVATIONS
On most official (landmark) sites (Tour Eiffel, Tour Montparnasse, Museums et cetera) you can buy tickets online. Generally speaking I have no more information than you do when browsing these sites. I have heard that sometimes it's hard to buy tickets from the US. This can be for several reasons.
Sometimes tickets are sold only a certain period of time in advance. Try again later.
System will not process your order. Try VPN browsing and/or accessing the website from another browser. A VPN masks your IP address by redirecting it through a specially configured remote server run by the VPN host. So, when you browse online using a VPN, the VPN server becomes the origin of your data. ... A VPN works like a filter that turns all the data you are sending and receiving into gibberish.
Call them! Most sites disclose a telephone number and most of the time someone speak English at the other end. (Especially restaurants often take reservations by phone).
My recommendations, stories, insights and personal accounts and preferences. Also with links here and there. Some information is also in the first section, but this info is even more personal. And in random order.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
THE SUBJECTS ↓
ARRIVING IN PARIS BY CAR
If you are arriving in Paris by car you will need to navigate the city. Traffic is dense and often slightly chaotic.
CRIT'AIR
Bare in mind that for Paris (Île de France) your car needs to have a Crit'Air qualification & label/sticker. This has to do with pollution. At times, when the air is (about to be) (heavily) polluted, certain qualifications can be denied access.
In any case (upon entering Paris) your car MUST have the label/sticker, visibly attached to your car's windscreen (bottom - passenger's seat).
For more information on the categories and how to obtain your Crit'Air qualification and label, click the link.
BOULEVARD PÉRIPHERIQUE
The Boulevard Périphérique is the ring road of Paris and its 20 arrondissements. It has many exits. If you know your way in Paris or if you are very confident you can burst through the Périph from whatever your direction and navigate the city, but if you want to avoid the city traffic as much as possible you want to pick the exit closest to your destination.
Here's a map of the Boulevard Périphérique, the highways and other main roads that arrive at the ring road + all the exits.
USING YOUR CAR WHILE IN PARIS
Of course you can use your car in Paris during your stay. But you don't want to, probably, for several reasons.
Finding a place to park your car in the streets is not easy, plus you have to pay at each new spot. Also, parking time is often limited. Also beware that in some streets you can't park on one side or the other on different days. Consult the signs in those streets to find out what the deal is.
As I said before, Paris traffic is often dense and chaotic. If you don't know the city by heart, you may not end up where you wanted to be (there is a lot of one-way-streets and/or pedestrian areas).
You may not find a place to park close to your destination due to the fact that it's a big city with heavy traffic. You will probably end up walking quite the distance anyway.
Public Parkings (underground garages) are everywhere (true) but they are not cheap. Bare in mind also that in some you cannot park if your car runs on LPG (GPL in French). Have a look at this INDIGO website for info on parking in Paris.
Public Transport is very well organized in Paris. There is a fine maze of métro lines (RATP), local trains (RER), buses (RATP) and Tramlines. You will never be more than - say - two hundred meters (give or take)or a few minutes walking away from your final destination, if you plan your trip economically.
THE LAY OUT OF PARIS
The city of Paris or the centre of Paris consists of 20 'arrondissements' (districts), each with their own identity. These arrondissements are numbered and start in the centre of Paris. They have their own names too.
Louvre
Bourse
Marais
Hôtel de Ville
Panthéon
Luxembourg
Invalides
Élysëe
Opéra
Magenta
République & Voltaire
Reuilly & Bercy
Bibliothèque & Italie
Observatoire & Montparnasse
Vaugirard & Grenelle
Auteuil & Passy
Ternes & Batignolles
Montmartre & La Chapelle
La Vilette & Buttes Chaumont
Ménilmontant & Pèr Lachaise
RIVE DROITE | RIVE GAUCHE
Paris districts are also referred to as being situated on the right bank (Rive Droite), north of the river Seine, and the left bank (Rive Gauche), south of the River Seine. So the 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and 15th arrondissements are Rive Gauche, and the rest (above the Seine) is Rive Droite.
SOME FACTS & FIGURES/STATISTICS
The Boulevard Périphérique is the ring road around the 20 (districts) arrondisements of Paris. It is 35,04 km long.
Since 2020 Paris is the largest metropolitan area in Europe (and the 14th largest in the world)Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is the second busiest airport in Europe.
The current (March 2022) metro area population of Paris is 11,142,000 | For more statistics go to the MacroTrends website.
Work in progress
WHERE TO START?
Well, Paris has over 44.000 Bars, Cafe's and Restaurants so one thing's for sure: you will find a place to eat!
WHAT TO EAT, WHERE TO EAT?
You can find any kind of food from all over the world in Paris. Certain areas are known for concentrations of certain foods.
I put links to The Fork and TripAdvisor in the LINKS section. Their search functions allow you to search for a type of cuisine, but you can put many other filters on your searches too.
TripAdvisor comes with reviews from customers/visitors from all over the world. It also allows reviewers to post (honest) photo's of their meals, so you will be getting a good idea of what a restaurant has to offer.
BISTRO'S, BOUILLONS & BRASSERIES
You will find a fine selection of Brasseries all over Paris. They have a long history and reputation and are very typical French. Often times a lot of very famous people have 'wined and dined' in these restaurants (and they like to flaunt it, can you blame them?)
Have a look on their websites: the famous customers are often mentioned somewhere. If you have your dinner at one of them, there is a good chance you are sitting down at Gustave Flaubert's table, in Winston Churchill's favorite seat, or at the bar where Josephine Baker drank her favorite Alsace wine!
Jacques Prévert, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and of course, Ernest Hemingway al liked to have dinner at La Coupole.
Jean Cocteau, Raymond Radiguet, Max Jacob and many more famous people frequented Brasserie Lipp.
RESERVATIONS?
A common misconception is that you have to make reservations in every restaurant. This is not true. There's a few (mostly high end / exclusive) restaurants that work with reservations only, mainly because the demand is very high.
We always just walk up to a restaurant and see if they have a table for two. But also larger groups ( 6 and up) usually have no trouble finding a table (in the somewhat larger restaurants, of course).
HONOR YOUR RESERVATION
If you have your mind set on a particular restaurant at a certain date and time, by all means (try and) make the reservation. There's no harm in that, of course. They will often ask for your telephone number to be able to reach you. Please have the courtesy to call (in time) in case you have to cancel or reschedule but try to honor your reservation in the first place: the restaurants had a hard enough time during COVID and need their paying guests!
FAST FOOD, OH-LA-LA
There is plenty of fast food everywhere too. McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Quick - they are in every arrondissement, much to the horror of the real French Foodies, of course. But the fact is that the French, generally speaking, love their McDo, every once in a while. They tend to upgrade the menu's somewhat and they sell beer. Really.
Here's a fun read on the take of a French blogger on the McDo/fastfood deal (including serving - Dutch Heineken - beer). It's a pity some of the referral links are broken (other peoples content: always a risk), but still worth it.
STREET VENDORS + CROISSANTS
There's also a lot of food to eat as you go. Street vendors, take-away food, not to mention all the goodies from the boulangeries & pâtisseries, of course!
We often get croissants (with or without almonds) and/or pain chocolat to go and eat those anywhere we can sit for a while (fountain, bench). Lovely.
Once we picked up Sushi from Sushi Wasabi on the Boulevard Saint-Germain (86, 75005) and had a picnic in the Jardin du Luxembourg. We brought some chilled wine, and a picnic basket with wine-glasses, plates, napkins and such from home. It was fabulous. (We had dinner at Wasabi Sushi too, once, in the restaurant. Good food).
This couple (Les Frenchies) made a video about great food in Paris to eat on the go.

And there's the street vendors that sell crèpes. Crèpes are very thin pancakes, usually served with Nutella (a hazelnut-chocolate paste) or any combination with whipped cream (chantilly) and fruit. Sometimes (when it's a dessert) sprinkled with some liquor, even (Cointreau, for instance).
THE FRENCH AND THEIR FOOD (HABITS)
I have created a story that you will find in the DOCUMENTATION section. It is about Parisians (and the French) and their food & restaurant habits.
LINKS
In the LINKS section, you will find a list of Restaurants and links to their websites. You will also find some interesting and informative websites that I linked to.
I cannot personally guarantee that all the restaurants mentioned in those blogs/posts still exist, so if you are interested, check and investigate! Because unfortunately a lot of restaurants did not survive due to a lack of business during COVID.
The individual restaurants I have linked to all were still up and running in march of 2022.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT TO DO & SEE
What do you need to see while in Paris? Well, that depends on who you are asking, of course.
Also: is it your first time in Paris? Do you want to be able to say you've seen the sights or do you prefer to take your time to really appreciate the city and extensively experience the sights?
There is something to be said for both, so I'm not judging here. You need to do what's important to you. And I understand that if coming to Paris is probably going to be a once in a lifetime experience, your to do list is going to have to tick more boxes, right?
A quick Google search will show you all sorts of itineraries for the number of days you get to spend in Paris. I will list a few.
Also, what is your personal style? What are your preferences? There's so much of that, that will determine what is the right way FOR YOU to navigate the city!
I'm lucky in that I get to visit Paris often. I love the city for its beauty, buildings, joy de vivre, lifestyle ... Plus I love France in general. So being in Paris, for me, is also very much blending in with the locals.
I have done the major sights - of course - many times, also because I used to tag along 'everyone' who ever wanted to go to Paris with me. My girl friends, former boyfriends - neighbor .... basically anyone who wanted to go.
When my niece and nephew turned 10 years old I took them to Paris (separately) , for I thought it was an important addition to their education (and another reason & 'excuse' for me to go).
Since the 17 years we've been together, it has been my husband and me. And we took his children to Paris too a few times. (Have a look at the Paris with Children section).

J'AIME PARIS CITY GUIDE | ALAIN DUCASSE
Alain Ducasse is a well-know chef, worldwide. He owns over 20 restaurants and 19 Michelin-stars. In Paris you probably know the Plaza Athénée.
Being the gourmand that he is (how could he not be) Ducasse handpicked a fine selection of places to eat and drink, patisseries and food shops all through Paris.
There's the big book (also nice), but this small book fits in your handbag, again holds a selection of the best addresses and costs somewhere between € 5,00 and € 10,00 and is a great souvenir of the places you've been to, or want to visit next time!

EIFFEL TOWER
Who does not want to bring back their own Eiffel Tower? Where to buy them?
Basically EVERYWHERE in Paris. At the official Souvenir Stands & Shops, News stands, at the Department Stores, on the street from street vendors (many of them without a permit to sell so they grab their merchandise and run when police comes near), in métro stations (so underground).
Even after you have left Paris, there is no escape. For at the Airports you can still buy them and at the gas stations along the autoroute when you leave Paris by car.
Of course the larger concentration of 'official' souvenir shops are near the main attractions:
On (and just off) the Champs Élysées
Montmartre in the streets around the Sacré Coeur and Place du Tertre plus The steps leading up to the Sacré Coeur; Square Louise Michel and the Rue de Steinkerque (that runs from place St.-Pierre to métro Anvers.
Trocadéro (Eiffel Tower) (Official Booth that is not always there - but also many street vendors. And in the 'shopping area' (under-ground) of the métro station of Trocadéro)
Rue de Rivoli next to the Tuileries gardens of the Louvre
Near the Notre Dame de Paris, in Rue d'Arcole (from Notre Dame towards Hôtel de Ville), in Rue de la Huchette (between Place Saint-Michel and Rue du Petit Pont)
The large department stores sell them too!
And this is just to name a few! There are so many souvenir shops and concentrations of souvenir shops, you can't miss them while in the center of town.
The Eiffel Towers come in all sizes, and colors too. With led-lights or 'plain'. On key-rings, as magnets, on t-shirts and socks, as drawings and paintings (or reprints thereof), as brooches, posters, on lighters, ashtrays, wallets and bags .... Oké, I'll stop.
And the same goes for the Arc de Triomphe.

JACQUARD TABLE LINEN & TEA TOWELS
Jacquard fabric is a type of fabric & pattern, woven on a Jacquard loom, a machine loom invented by the French textile artisan Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804. Jacquard is also known as damask or brocade.
The woven patterns are often complicated and colorful, and sometimes ton-sur-ton, which gives them it a chic and sophisticated look.
In France, often typical French texts and/or images are woven into the fabric, making it a desired & stylish French souvenir.
On street markets in the South of France they often sell tea towels for € 15,00 per three. I have never bought them in Paris but I'm sure they are there too. I do know that fantastic jacquard table linen is easily found. In shops (and online).
Here's a list for inspiration
Maisons du Monde
FOOD SOUVENIRS
Herbs de Provence
Shopping Insolite à Paris | Elodie Rambaud | Les 235 adresses d'une styliste déco | Marabout (2014)
So this book is already somewhat 'older', but still a gem. Plenty of great photo's, a lot of the addresses are still valid (but check, before you go). In the back of the book you'll find maps per district (arrondissement) and a separate listinbg of addresses of all the shops mentioned in the book.
You can still find it second hand "occassion" on the FNAC website.
WHERE TO STAY ?
Paris hotels offer rooms for 3-4 people, or separate adjoining rooms (not to be confused with adjacent, where the rooms are next or close to each other but have no direct connection).
HOSTELS
There's Hostels and most of them have rooms for four (or six, or more), so you can have your privacy as a family. Although we have not stayed here, Jo & Joe looks like great fun. It's located just outside the Périphérique but that should not keep you; there's several métro stations nearby. Have a look at the site: it looks like quite the adventure for kids. You can click to find other hostels too, on this site.
B&B HOTELS
B&B Hotels is a well known chain of budget hotels all through France. Most B&B Hotels have rooms for a family. I selected 2 adults and 2 children and found plenty B&B hotels offering deals all over Paris.
B&B Hotels are not 'fancy'. It's basically beds and a shower (and toilet, of course). It has other facilities (breakfast area, food vending machines, microwave ovens to heat meals, coffee machines, reception desk et cetera) but since we always do breakfast (and dinner) in a café or restaurant anyway, the simple breakfast area dis not bother us. We were only here to sleep, and for that it's perfect, if you are traveling on a somewhat low-budget.
We stayed at the one at Porte de la Villette with our children. This one has a huge parking under the hotel (most of them have parkings). The métro was only a 5 minute walk (to ligne 7, that took us straight into the centre of Paris). It's not a fancy part of Paris, but we never felt unsafe (we are used to big cities and big-city-people and small-big-city-problems).
AIRBNB
Later on, when the children were older, we were using AirBnB. And we loved it! As we were going to stay in Paris for a full week, we wanted a bit more than just a place to sleep.
Whole apartment to ourselves, a place to really come home to at night, a kitchen to prepare dinners and breakfast in (a boulangerie on each corner or our street where the children went - by themselves - to get the baguettes & croissants), a washing machine, a bath to soak in after long Paris walks ...
NEIGHBORHOOD
And a lovely and vibrant neighborhood with plenty shops, café's & restaurants. Métro station close by (two, actually, to two different lines!). Plus a bus stop around the corner.
Unfortunately, this AirBnB is not rented out anymore, so I cannot recommend this one, but I am a serious advocate for (AirBnB) apartment rentals. And for the 11th district (arrondissement) of Paris, in the Faidherbe-Chaligny neigborhood.
FUN THINGS TO DO WITH CHILDREN
OK, so this depends hugely on their ages and interests, of course. We are lucky in that our children basically loved everything, even going to museums. Museums in Paris offer special information aimed at children.
Our children loved, and we can highly recommend:
The Jardin des Plantes and it's Ménagerie (ZOO). We also went to the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) that's in the Jardin des Plantes. The building is magnificent and there's this Gallery of Evolution that is a must for young and old. If you (and your kids) like everything animals and nature, this is the place to be.
A canal cruise! We went on the Vedettes boat that docks at Pont de Suffrèn, in front of the Eiffel Tower. It was starting to get dark when we left and at that moment the Eiffel Tower sparkling lights went on. It was magic; the kids were in awe!
Souvenir Shopping. We gave the children each a certain amount of 'pocket money' they could spend in Paris to buy souvenirs for themselves and their friends. They bought T-Shirts, a whole bunch of Eiffel Towers at the souvenir booth at Trocadéro, one toy each(from BHV) and Eiffel Tower lolly-pops at the Louvre Museum.
Riding the métro's and buses. We bought ourselves an 'abonnement' for the whole week (for two zones) so we were free to go anywhere, when we wanted, by métro and bus. Figuring out the routes and riding the métro was fun. Especially interesting was the number one line, which has no driver. They sat all the way in the front as if they were driving that particular 'train'.
We were going to La Défense, and they liked that too, the Grand Arche but also the statue of the large thumb, where wo took pictures. Of course they loved going to the Quick Burger Restaurant in the large Shopping Centre Les 4 Temps. Our youngest, who is a scout, loved going to the Nature & Decouvertes Shop, and even bought some gear for camping.
There are a few large showrooms to car brands on the Avenue des Champs Élysees, and they are also open at night. Our boys loves the concept cars and best/most expensive cars on display. Renault had a race car on display that you could sit in (and take photo's). Each store also sells merchandising stuff, so we walked away with a keyring here and a t-shirt there ...
Having dinner on the Champs Élysees with a view on the Arc de Triomphe (that we had 'climbed' just before - which was also a huge success!), You may think that dinner on the Champs Élysées is mega expensive, but it does not have to be. For starters there's the fast food restaurants, often with a terrace on the street. There's McDonald's, KFC and Quick. We had dinner at Bistro Romain, or Bistro Des Champs as they now call it. They serve a "menu enfant" for only € 12,90 (main, dessert and a drink). Other prices are also very reasonable.
This one we did not do with the children, but we did go twice (Van Gogh & Klimt-Hundertwasser) and I think children will love it too! It's the Atelier des Lumières (75011).
It's an exposition (immersion) in an old factory. When you walk in it's like actually walking into a large painting. Artworks are projected all around you. It's a show that runs continuously. For all your little space cowboys & girls, the Destination Cosmos expo is returning in April & May of 2022.
The Atelier des Lumières has a fabulous museum/souvenir shop with lots of books for young and old, artsy souvenirs and funny items.
To see about the other expositions, you can watch Culturespaces videos on Vimeo.
PARIS AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
If I could tell you exactly what kind of weather it will be when you are in Paris, I would be a wealthy woman. There are some general observations one can make and stats to consult, though.
The climate in Paris is continental which means it's mild, overall.
Winters are generally cold but not freezing. Snow - however romantic in Paris - is rare. The last time was in February of 2018. There has been some snow before and after but very light and often not enough and/or long enough to paint the picturesque scenes we all like. The highest snowfall ever recorded in one day was 40 cm (15.75 in) on 2 March 1946. But again, this is/was a rarity.
Summers can be hot, although it's not a rule and somewhat occasionally. I have encountered a few weeks in summer with high temperatures. On the one hand it's great, but on the other a bit too much if you want to actively stroll the city. It can be tiring.
The rain is frequent with higher precipitations than - for instance - London, occurring all year round. Some stats say it rains on average 10-15 days per month. Although I have had rain during the many times I have been to Paris, I must say my dry Paris days outweigh the rainy days by far!
SO, WHAT CLOTHES TO BRING?
My advice is to monitor the forecast for Paris every day from about a week before you leave for Paris to get some idea of what the weather will be like. I have the Yahoo Weather app installed on my phone and Meteo France in my Favorites on my computer. And here's some input from a site called Weather Atlas.
Dress accordingly ;-) Oh, and bring an umbrella. If you are like me you'll be carrying it around to jinx the weather system (and hardly ever use it).
I love movies! And I love movies that feature Paris (and France) even better, of course. Lucky for me, a lot of movies were shot in Paris. You can do tours, visiting those film locations.
IMDB & FILMING LOCATIONS IN PARIS
If you are fond of movies, like me, you probably know IMDb (The Internet Movie Database). You can create a (free) account, but also without one you can access a ton of information about a ton of films. They also list the film-locations of movies and not just mention "Paris", but the exact street or venue or whatever.
You can do a search for locations too. From the search menu choose All > Advanced > Filming Locations and then type "Paris" (or a more specific location), to see if movies were shot there!
TAKE A TOUR
Here are ten filming locations for movies you probably know. I have linked the movies on IMDb and you can watch the trailers there.
Musée Rodin | Midnight in Paris
Bir Hakeim Bridge | Inception
Place de la Concorde | The Devil wears Prada
Saint-Sulpice Church | Da Vinci Code
L'Hotel de Soubise | Marie Antoinette
Le Nemours on Place Colette | The Tourist
Le Café des Deux Moulins | Amélie
Bistrot La Renaissance | Inglorious Bastards
Shakespeare & Company | Before Sunset
Le Caveau du Huchette Jazz Bar | La La Land
By the way, I have seen all these movies except for The Tourist (now on my watchlist) and liked them all, so if you want to get in the Paris mood, watch them!
Just for fun: if you have serious plans for filming a movie in Paris yourself, here's how to go about that (Mairie de Paris, Mission Cinéma, Bureau des Tournages). And do let me know when it's premiering.
If you want to do a private tour with a guide, there are several options. I picked a few but I have never done this myself.

PARIS MOVIE WALKS BOOK
Blog by Courtney Traub on the book by Michaël Schürmann. Apparently he does guided tours still. You can order the book from Amazon.
(GOING TO THE) CINEMA IN PARIS
Paris has 88 cinema's. The UGC and Gaumont being the big chains, but there's a lot of independent cinema's and film houses too.
Instead of subtitles, a lot of movies (that are not French spoken, originally) are being dubbed in French, still. So if you decide you want to go to the cinema whilst in Paris, beware of this. There are cinema's, however, where they show movies in their original version (VO).
Almost all multiplex cinemas and independent cinema houses show international films from all around the world in their original version subtitled in French. It has become the norm in Paris in recent years. To find them in a listing, look for’ VOST’ (‘Version original Sub-Titled’) then choose from the huge number of cinemas in the city.
For the film agenda/listing go to 'Officiel des Spectacles
LOSTINFRENCHLATION
This might be fun!
Lostinfrenchlation offers a unique experience to non-French speakers, you get to see a French (spoken) film with English subtitles.
The events are held in typical Parisian Art House Cinema's
Luminor Hôtel de Ville | 75004
Club de l'Etoile | 75017
Studio 28 | 75018
L'Arlequin | 75006
L'Entrepôt | 75014
The films shown have just recently come out, and - depending on the program - speakers come to talk about the film, in English, after it has been screened. Often the director of the film. In some cases there is a movie-walk or other small event afterwards
Before each screening, a themed cocktail event is also proposed within the cinema.

A SELECTION OF MY FAVORITES
First of all there is this list with 25 titles I compiled a while ago on IMDb. You can click on each title to go to that specific film and watch the trailer.
I must confess that "A Good Year" by Ridley Scott is sort of the odd one out. It's not a French movie and half of the cast is not French. But it plays in Provence and is one of my all time fave movies.
Since the list, new movies have been released. Amongst them
So, grab your popcorn and enjoy!
All the information on this website is for free, obviously. And so is the documents that you can download from the DOCUMENTATION section. If you want or need further personal assistance preparing for your Paris trip, I can help.
All this information (on this site and everywhere else) can be somewhat overwhelming, especially if you have never been to Paris before and don't know what to expect, or where to start. I get that.
Trust me, you will find that Paris is not at all an untamable beast.
Once you know how the subway system works (also not rocket-science) you will easily find and plan your way to everything you want to see and do.
If you are a planner pur-sang, like me, you want to have everything under control and planned beforehand (only, in my case - often - to let the plans go, to just go with the Parisian flow). Of course, having been to Paris as often as I have, plus having the opportunity to go back quite easy, makes it easier for me to say: there's always next time.
So you don't have that time, or opportunity. And you don't know where to start? Or you simple haven't got the time to do all the investigating and planning? I can help you.
What I would need from you is
Your travel dates and arrangements to and from Paris (+ how long will you be staying?)
A set of information about you and your travel companions
Have you booked a hotel already and if so, which one?
Have you made other arrangements in Paris already that I need to incorporate?
What is your list of things to do and see in Paris? Is that list set in stone?
What is your budget, especially if you want me to suggest hotels, restaurants and things to do.
We will do an intake conversation after which I will start organizing your trip for you.
Contact info & fees to be specified later.
