Elina Hwang is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Evert McCabe Endowed Fellowship in Private Enterprise at the Foster School of Business, the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to joining Foster School, Elina earned a Ph.D. in Business Technologies from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. Before her academic pursuits, Elina spent several years in consulting and banking.
Elina's research explores the social and business implications of emerging technologies (e.g., AI), with particular interest in studying how these emerging technologies transform the way we live and work, search and share information, interact with people, and learn from each other. Based upon the understanding of emerging technologies' social and business implications, Elina aims to identify ways to enhance the positive outcomes of these technologies while minimizing any potential negative consequences. Central to Elina's research methodology is the analysis of large-scale field data, often sourced from industry collaborations. She employs various analytical tools, such as econometrics, network analysis, and machine learning, to uncover hidden patterns. Her research is interdisciplinary, drawing from a wide array of fields, including information systems, economics, sociology, organizational studies, and operations management.
Elina's work has been published in top journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Organization Science, and Production and Operations Management. Elina is currently serving as an Associate Editor of Information Systems Research.
