Intro
This proposal outlines the design and development of a self opening dumpster that addresses the physical challenges and . By integrating technology, the self opening dumpster aims to make the disposing of waste more efficient and accessible for all. This presentation details the many benefits that come with this idea/project.
Traditional dumpsters are metal containers with metal sliding doors on the side and semi-heavy, plastic lids, which for some may require climbing the side of these inaccessible dumpsters. Although dumpsters are often visible and provide side to side entry, the constant exposure to the elements causes the metal to rust and become difficult to open and/or close. These large containers house community waste, spoiled food, pet waste, among many other items that can cause harm and illness if contact is made. The less physical contact a person has with dumpsters the sooner the challenges can be addressed/resolved. Challenges such as the excessive amounts of littering, physical injuries for small children and elderly, and persons with disabilities, and exposure to diseases and the fast spread of illness.
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to aid in the decrease of pollution and littering, decrease the spread of germs/diseases, and provide an efficient and accessible dumpster to the community.
The purpose of this project is to help people and increase hygiene a self opening garbage can provides a more hygienic and safer way for people to dispose of their waste
Objective
Efficiency and Accessibility: The automated dumpster opener would ensure all waste is properly discarded into the container. Making it easier and safer for everyone no matter the age or strength.
Hygiene: Less physical contact could reduce the exposure to harmful chemicals, and illnesses caused by Covid, Ebola, Tape and Ringworms, Lice and more.
Sustainability: Make use of environment friendly materials and effective materials
Scanner:
Cards given to residents of the area
Weight sensors to identify when the dumpster is being approached with waste.
Actuation:
Electric motors to open and close the dumpster lid.
Power Supply:
Solar panels integrated into the design for energy efficiency.
Battery.
Materials
Body: Stainless steel cardboard for prototype
Lid: Lightweight but durable material. Durable plastic or sheet metals. Cardboard for prototype
Seals: Rubber sealing Glue for prototype to prevent odors and animals.
Computer system: An Arduino
Strategy
Conduct market research to analyze user needs and existing solutions.
Prototype the self-opening mechanism and conduct usability testing.
Refine the design based on user feedback.
Finalize material choices and manufacturing processes.
Build and test a smaller prototype
Neighborhood restaurants, parks, campuses, beaches etc.
Gather feedback and improve on things
Benefits
Improved Hygiene: Reduces the need for contact with the dumpsters
Improved Accessibility: Aids individuals with disabilities elderly and those carrying large items.
