Dear Scholar,
My name is Kate Hey, and I'll be your instructor for ELIC 22 and ELIC 922 this semester. Whether you are a new student at MJC or a returning one, I am very excited to have you in my class. I have put this site for you to show you what our class is about.
I wish you a fun and productive semester! Remember, if you have questions, comments, suggestions or problems at any time during the semester,
please talk to me.
See you in class,
Kate
PS. You're welcome to call me Kate or Professor Hey.
Our first class meeting is on Monday, January 12th. We will meet in Founders Hall (East Campus) room 252 at 11:10AM. This is a 16-week course.
I'm looking forward to seeing you in person!
This is a low-intermediate level grammar course for students whose first language is not English. The emphasis is on application of grammar to writing and increased focus on error awareness and editing skills.
We will meet in person twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:10AM-12:25PM. You will be asked to do some work online in Canvas - more information will be given in class.
Canvas - your assignments will be announced in class and posted in Canvas in weekly modules. Please go through each weekly module thoroughly page by page as they are designed to help you succeed in this course.
Due Dates: all assignments and their due dates will be posted on Canvas. If you miss a due date, you may submit your assignment in the Late Assignment module. You can submit only two late assignments this semester to receive credit, so please pay attention to due dates. Submit all assignments in Canvas (instructions will be posted with each assignment). Please do not send your assignments to me via email as these will not count towards your grade.
Testing: There will be short quizzes and longer tests in class and on Canvas. I will give a make-up quiz or test only if you notify me well before the day of the quiz or test to arrange an alternate time. You can make-up only one test or quiz during the semester. Any missed tests or quizzes after that will receive zero points, so please make sure to be in class every Tuesday and Thursday so that you don't miss anything.
Office Hours: I will hold weekly office hours where everyone is encouraged to join if you have time. During the office hours, I will answer any questions you may have regarding that week’s material. Please bring your questions, and let’s talk grammar.
My office hours this semester:
In Founders Hall room 240E, on:
Monday/Tuesday 9-9:30AM
Mondays 12:30-1:00PM
Wednesdays 12:30-2PM
Tuesdays/Thursdays 1:45-2:15PM
In Yosemite Hall room A210, on:
Mondays/Wednesdays 6:00-6:30PM
Communicative Activities: There will be activities where you will be asked to interact with one another. These may include Discussion Board Activities, short videos, and in class group work. This is the best time to practice your English, so please make sure to participate in them.
Q&A Café – This is an open discussion forum for students to post questions about the course and to interact with one another. This is a space where students can virtually ask questions to the entire class. If you know the answer to any of the questions, please help your classmate by answering it. I’ll check in on the discussion to help with any unanswered questions periodically.
Attend our first class meeting on Monday, January 12 at 11:10AM in Founders Hall (East Campus) room 252.
Sign in to our class in Canvas - Due: January 14 or before.
Go through the Start Here module and take the Syllabus Quiz (doing so will open the Week 1 module) - Due: January 16 or before.
Complete the Week 1 module - Due: January 18th.

Use English grammar in speaking and writing with grammatical accuracy at the low-intermediate level.
Employ editing strategies to self-edit compositions at the low-intermediate level.
I am very excited that you are a part of this course. My goal is to create a trusting and inclusive learning community where you play an important role as a member. You will have an opportunity to learn grammar skills in this class that will help you succeed in college and also learn from and about your classmates who come from different countries and represent different parts of the world.
Together, by constant encouragement and support, we will do our best for you to succeed in this course to become successful English language learners.
Check Canvas on a regular basis for announcements and homework assignments. It’s important for your success in this class. If you’re having trouble doing so, please email me at heyk@yosemite.edu and let me know.
Try your best not to miss any tests and quizzes. If you miss a quiz or a test, you receive zero “0” points. If you miss the final exam, you may not pass the class.
Please, use English only while interacting with your classmates.
Avoid plagiarism/cheating at all cost. Unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) is considered a form of plagiarism. This means that AI-assisted work is not allowed in this course, except when the instructor approves of its use and the student acknowledges using it. Any plagiarized work will receive zero points and will be reported to the Dean of School of Language Arts and Education.
Drop Policy: Enrolled students who have not logged in to Canvas to complete the Course Introduction Module within the first 2 days of class may be dropped from the class. In addition, if a student misses class meetings and does not contribute to class for the first week (this includes submitting assignments, participating in discussion board and email), the student may be dropped from the class. You must email me ahead of time if you are unable to participate in class.
Communication: If you have a question for me, please attend the office hours or email me. Do not post questions or comments in the comment box within an assignment in Canvas. I do not get these messages in a timely manner, so the best way to get my feedback is during an office hour meeting or through email.
When you email me, please state the course name in the ‘subject’ line and your full name in the email. Also, include the name of the assignment you are enquiring about in your email. I usually respond within 24-36 hours Monday-Thursday and 72 hours on the weekend.
Time commitment: This is a 16-week 4-unit course. Expect to spend between 8-10 hours working on grammar per week.
Please know that I am here to help you. I want you to succeed in this class, so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, worries, or concerns. Let's work together to ensure your success.
