ELAS believes that as Latine students, we have a shared responsibility to commit ourselves to promoting and encouraging the self-determination, self-empowerment, and liberation of our communities and all marginalized communities that share our struggle. Through our active political involvement and education, as well as through our collective mobilization, we fight now in order to guide and empower future generations.
We believe that political involvement and education are the avenues for change in our society. This is why ELAS continues to work both within the university and within the community by providing support with 4 organization projects and 3 annual events, all run and organized by ELAS Executive Board Members.
We recognize that ELAS has, in the past, fostered an organization that has made Black, Indigenous, and Central American people feel unwelcome in spaces created by us. We wish to change this through continued action and accountability from our ELAS members, and within the spaces we create.
Our Vision and Values
ELAS History
1968 - ELAS de UCLA (fka MEChA) started as the United Mexican American Students (UMAS) - same year as the Chicano blowouts
1969 - UMAS ---> Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlan (MEChA) de UCLA
2019 - MEChA Conference hosted at UCLA, MEChA’s name was changed nationally to Movimiento Estudiantil Progressive Action
2024 - MEChA de UCLA becomes Empowering Latines Against Struggle
MEChA has continually engaged in political redefining over the years to shift away from a Mexican hegenomic and nationalist perspective, and address the erasure and exclusion of Black, Indigenous, Central American, and queer/trans communities. Because of this, last year, MEChA de UCLA was renamed to Empowering Latines Against Struggle.
