Greetings! My name is Lauren Roberts and I will be the instructor for your student(s) this school year. I teach 7th grade ELA for EMS. This year we will be focusing on narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. We will be accompanying this writing complex texts of the same nature. It is my hope that your student(s) begin developing their writing voice in my class. I also hope to build your student(s) relationship with reading as well.
While there is no way to know what this year will bring, a strong partnership between us will help us work through unexpected challenges, especially with the ongoing global pandemic. I look forward to working with your student on content and standards, socio-emotional learning, and 21st century skills. Please feel free to reach me at my LAUSD email lauren.roberts@lausd.net, we are in partnership together to support your student(s) and their well being.
I use a four point grade scale for student work toward standard mastery.
4 is advanced proficiency in meeting the target standard(s)
3 is proficiency in meeting the target standard(s)
2 is developing proficiency in meeting the target standard(s)
1 is emerging proficiency in meeting the target standard(s)
0 indicates there is insufficient proficiency in meeting the target standard(s)
Grade scale:
3.8-4 A
3.0-3.7 B
2.0-2.9 C
1.0-1.9 D
0.0-0.9 F
Students grades will also be broken into categories with varying weights, they are as follows:
Cooperation/ Participation 5%
Formal Assessments 40%
Grammar Lessons 15%
Reading 20%
Writing 20%
One composition notebook or spiral bound notebook will be required for the class. I will have some available to students if need be.
Students are also required to bring their fully charged iPad or Chromebook with them to class each day.
Many resources will be made available to your student(s) in our classroom. The only material required of them is to bring an independent reading selection to class each day. This text can be a physical book or e-book.
Students can feel free to go to the school library, and we will be having a library walkthrough and tutorial at the beginning of this year.
The Los Angeles Public Library is also an option for students to acquire reading material online or in a physical copy. A tutorial on navigating the public library online e-book system is linked here.
Students are to be in their seats reading their independent reading material at the start of class
Students will engage with one another warmly and productively
Students will ask for clarification or assistance when needed
Students will actively listen to myself and one another
Students will be active members of their learning community
