Here’s a shout out to some El Toro sailors who are competing at the highest level of sailing.

Hill “Buzz” Blackett III is an active Toro racer both on the mainland and on Kaneohe Bay. He’s now double handing his carbon Antrim 27 in the Pacific Cup with Karl Robrock. Buzz also sails a Waszp.

Makani Andrews finished second in the El Toro Junior Nationals five years ago and won the Hawaii Bullship that same year. Since then he’s turned into a world-class threat in the foiling windsurfing class. He’s currently in second place on Lake Garda in the Youth Worlds.

David Liebenberg won the El Toro Senior Nationals at Clear Lake in 2014. He’ll be racing in France real soon.

For the rest of us, especially in the SF Bay Area, we have two fun days of Toro racing.

Summer is the best time of year to sail at Lake Merritt. Vickie Gilmour and her crew did a great job running the Mayor’s Cup Regatta this year on Sunday, June 30th. The first race started at noon. Offshore starts. Four races. Gordie Nash won with three firsts and a third. Tom Burden was second with three seconds and a fourth. Chris Sullivan finished third. Tony Su sailed very fast when he was going in the right direction. Paul Zander sailed the boat belonging to Pete Blasbert, our 103 year old emeritus El Toro sailor, who’s still going strong.

The Lake Merritt folks are really hoping they’ll get a great turnout for the first race of their FIRST SUMMER/FALL SERIES REGATTA on July 20th.

Kudos to Chris Sullivan for jerry-rigging a car top carrier on top of his wife’s Subaru!
