The story of Eighth Grade is a very small-scale, personal one. As such, there’s no involvement of any government bodies or agencies. In terms of privacy though, it can be clearly seen that most of the characters in the movie are alright with throwing away their privacy by virtue of using social media publicly. Many of the platforms used in the movie, such as Snapchat, are normally quite private, but are known to yield information to government entities upon proper request. It has become a rather common sentiment among people of Kayla’s age that people need not be concerned with what information they’re putting into the world, since the government is considered to already have all the information they could want.
