This course challenges students to investigate current trends in health care. Topics include ethics, forensic medicine, infectious diseases, organ transplants, cell biology and cancer, and biomedical research. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course.

Health Science I-HU402X0

CREDIT: 1 GRADE: 9-12

This course focuses on human anatomy, physiology and human body diseases and disorders, and biomedical therapies. Students will learn about health care careers within the context of human body systems. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include service learning and job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. Biology is recommended as preparation for this course.

Health Science II-HU422X0

CREDIT: 1 GRADE: 11-12 REQUIREMENTS: Guidance approval required. Students must have completed Health Science I.

This course is designed to help students expand their understanding of financing and trends of health care agencies, fundamentals of wellness, legal and ethical issues, concepts of teamwork, and effective communication. Students will learn health care skills, including health care provider CPR and first aid training. English language arts and science are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include internship, mentorship, service learning, and job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course. NAS 101 Nurse Aide I-HJ015X0NAI

CREDIT: 2 GRADE: 11-12 REQUIREMENTS: Guidance approval required. Students are strongly recommended to complete Health Science I and Health Science II. Students must have an unweighted GPA of 2.8 and maintain an 80 average in the course to continue to clinicals.

This Surry Community College course is available through Career and College Promise and includes basic nursing skills required to provide safe, competent personal care for individuals. Emphasis is placed on person-centered care, the aging process, communication, safety/emergencies, infection prevention, legal and ethical issues, vital signs, height and weight measurements, elimination, nutrition, basic restorative care/rehabilitation, dementia, mental health and end-of-life care. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills and be eligible to test for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry.

*There are several costs associated with this course that students are responsible for. This course is weighted .5 for each credit.
