The overarching objective of the Air Quality Lab at the Medical University of South Carolina is develop state-of-the-art approaches to better understanding and reducing the impacts of environmental exposures. We are actively developing projects that promote community-based participatory research and citizen science. The lab also serves a teaching laboratory to students at MUSC.
The MUSC Air Quality Lab provides state-of-the-art environmental monitoring solutions that can support environmental health research in a variety of settings ranging from large-scale long-term ambient assessment to short-duration personal exposures. The lab entails a broad range of environmental monitoring and sampling equipment, Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, and supports application of geospatial science through geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) technologies.
Physically, the lab is located in the Darby Children’s Research Institute on the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina. The 500 ft2 lab is outfitted with a standard wet lab facility and a freezer to store environmental samples. There are two high performance computer workstations for data processing, storage, and analysis of environmental sample data and storage space for field instrumentations.
