Doctoral Thesis
Cryomilled group IV elements (Silicon & Germanium) for optoelectronic applications
Synthesis of contamination-free nanoparticles of elemental semiconductors (silicon and germanium) in bulk quantity utilizing the indigenously developed cryo mill setup to synthesize p-type and n-type silicon nanoparticles. Doped silicon nanoparticles are employed in organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells to show improved efficiency. The polycrystalline nature of milled nanoparticles has been revealed and a one-step simple etching process has been proposed to obtain the nanocrystals, which showed photoluminescence in the ultraviolet range with a 17% yield. Size-selective functionalization has been employed to obtain silicon ink. Similarly, germanium ink has been synthesized and successfully employed in inkjet printed diode fabrication. Silicon nanocrystals have also been utilized as a charge-trapping material in semiconducting devices.
