Travel and accommodation

Meeting location

The location of the meeting is Bush House. It is close to Holborn Tube station (Piccadilly and Central lines) and Temple Tube station (Circle and District lines) and a ten minute walk from Charing Cross (Bakerloo line and the Charing Cross Branch of the Northern Line). Here you can find a Tube Map.

Anyway you can use this website (typing Bush House into it as your destination) to plan your journey from wherever you are inside London to reach the meeting location. The best way to move around London is using the public transport (tube, bus, trains https://tfl.gov.uk/). Buying a Visitor Oyster Card is probably the best option. These contactless cards can be purchased and charged at any tube station. In addition, payment with contactless credit/debit cards are also accepted in most trains/buses/tubes. Note: buses do NOT accept cash!

There are many many restaurants in the KCL Strand area but here we mention some of our favourites. Food within 5-10 min walking distance from Bush House:

  • Bush house and Strand KCL canteens. ~ £5
  • The (amazing) sandwich place: Dilieto Sandwich Bar. ~ £5
  • Thai Square Strand: ~ £11 (Two course meal)
  • SIAM Eatery. ~ £7
  • Crown. ~ £6
  • Leon ~£7 (they have student discount)
  • Wasabi ~£6 (and 50% discount 30min before closing)
  • Byron ~£10 (and 30% discount with student UniDays)
  • Many many others, check Google Maps. KCL is close to Covent Garden, Leicester Square and China Town.

Note that card payments are widely accepted in London but some places don't accept cash anymore.

Getting to London

London is served by five airports.

Heathrow airport is the largest. Here you can find how to get from Heathrow to central London: https://www.heathrow.com/transport-and-directions/getting-to-central-london. The cheapest and easiest way is to take the Tube: the Piccadilly Line will take you into central London in about 50 minutes. If you are in a hurry, you could take the Heathrow Express. This is a fast train that runs between Heathrow and Paddington Station. Often you will need to get a Tube from Paddington so it can be quicker to just take the Tube from Heathrow.

Gatwick airport is another popular airport that is relatively easy to get to: https://www.gatwickairport.com/to-and-from/. The Gatwick Express train service runs regularly between Gatwick airport and Victoria Station. It is slightly cheaper to buy your tickets in advance from https://www.gatwickexpress.com.

London City Airport is the most central airport, but is quite small. It takes about 30 minutes to get into central London: https://www.londoncityairport.com/getting-here/to-and-from-airport

Stansted airport is located outside London but there is a regular Express train service into central London (Tottingham Hale or Liverpool Street Station) that takes about 45 minutes: https://www.stanstedairport.com/getting-to-and-from/

Luton airport is also outside London. Again, there is a regular train service into London (St. Pancras) https://www.london-luton.co.uk/to-and-from-lla. There is a short bus journey between Luton airport and the Luton airport train station.

You can also use the Eurostar which is just two hours from Brussels or Paris: https://www.eurostar.com/.

Cheap-ish

There are two large hotel chains in the UK called Travelodge and Premier Inn. They are both pretty average, though usually clean. They have locations all over London and the price depends on location and demand. Cheaper hotels in these chains might be on the outskirts closer to the airports and you can take the tube into the centre of town (for example, Premier Inn in Tottenham Hale is close to Stansted Airport and it takes around 25 minutes to get into central London on the tube).
