EERI-SEAOSC typically host 1~2 research roundtables each quarter, with priority granted to PhD students/candidates and post-doctoral researchers who are looking to mentor undergraduate and graduate students for at least one academic quarter. We work with the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department to ensure that these students receive academic credit for their work.
For many of our members, these opportunities become their first research experience at UCLA.
Check our roundtables in 2019-2020 AY below.
Saman Abdullah | January 30, 2020
Saman Abdullah, a longstanding member of EERI at UCLA, presented on his research on the performance of concrete coupling beams subjected to simulated wind and seismic loading protocols. Members learned about finding the balance between practice and academia, especially how research can aid decision-making in practice through code revisions. Interested members were able to secure assistant positions for the upcoming quarter.
Agam Tomar | January 14, 2020
Agam Tomar presented on the "Dynamic Updating of Post-Earthquake Damage and Functional Restoration Forecasts of Water Distribution Systems using Bayesian Methods." Attending members gained insight into mixing post-earthquake optimization methods
Jason Buenker | December 4, 2019
The first research roundtable of the year featured Jason Buenker, a Ph.D. candidate specializing in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The presentation was centered on soil-structure-interaction effects on the cyclic failure potential of silts and clays. Lowerclassmen interested in the topic were able to secure research assistant positions that continued into the succeeding quarters.
