TEAM TECHNICAL LEADS

Jason Hick, Los Alamos National Laboratory (Co-Lead)

Gert Svensson, KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Co-Lead)

James Laros, Sandia National Laboratory (Advisor)

  • The Procurement Team has members that span both HPC sites and the vendor community. The HPC sites are from the United States, Europe and Japan. The vendor members include most of the major HPC system integrators as well as the major silicon component providers.

Jason Hick is the Facilities, Operations, and User Support (FOUS) Program Manager for the Advanced Simulation & Computing Program (ASC) at Los Alamos National Lab (LANL). Jason has responsibility for facilitiating production computing and infrastructure necessary to support three HPC facilities, around-the-clock supercomputing operations, and ASC Program users. Jason supports multiple energy efficiency efforts for HPC at LANL to include monitoring usage and supporting analytics to improve efficiency, and modeling water and electrical usage to optimize system performance. He is also leading the Energy Efficient HPC Working Group Team on Energy Efficient Procurement Considerations. Prior to his work at LANL, Jason led the Storage Systems Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Jason holds a BS in Computer Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point and started his career as a Captain in the US Army.

Gert Svensson is the Deputy Director of the PDC Center for High Performance Computing at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Gert has worked with high-performance computing at PDC since 1990. He has initiated and lead various European research projects in different areas of HPC. Gert has also been involved with and directed numerous HPC procurements. He is also responsible for the infrastructure at PDC and is especially interested in energy efficiency and heat re-use for supercomputing systems. Since 2017 Gert has been an active member of the Energy Efficient HPC Working Group Team on Energy Efficient Procurement Considerations. Gert obtained an M.Sc. in Physics from KTH in 1981. After a period in the telecommunication industry, he returned to the Computer System laboratory at KTH. His early research interests were parallel and concurrent programming and open-source software.

James H. Laros III is a Distinguished Member of Technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories. Over his more than 30-year career to date, James has served the United States of America in a number of capacities beginning with four years active duty in the United States Air Force followed by a year in the Air National Guard. James continued his service as a civilian as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative program in Colorado working as a Systems Analyst. James began working at Sandia in 1995 where he has focused on various technical disciplines related to High Performance Computing (HPC) including Hierarchical Mass Storage, file-systems, systems management and systems software, Reliability Availability and Serviceability (RAS) systems and light-weight kernel operating systems. Over the past ten years James has focused on technical leadership in the area of HPC platform architecture. James currently leads many programs including: Vanguard Advanced Architecture Prototype program, Astra Chief Architect and project lead, the Alliance for Extreme Scale Computing (ACES) Crossroads lead architect and deputy program manager, and the Advanced Architecture Testbed program lead. James has won numerous awards including three R&D100 awards.
