When Postgraduate Research (PGR) students experience increased stress, Melissa Yeo, a research PGR students co-ordinator, would take them for a walk around the local parks to have a chat and discuss any concerns related to their research environment and progress. This led to the “Walk & Talk” initiative, an opportunity for PhD students, research associates, and lecturers in EECS to step away from their screens and share their experiences and positive feedback with newly joined PhD students.
Starting in November 2024, we’ve held more than 20 weekly walk-and-talk sessions and visited a variety of parks, museums, and green spaces around Queen Mary’s Mile End campus. On our walks, we’ve been able to pet the animals at Stepney City Farm, take a tour of Mile End Stadium, and see a variety of birds and wildlife.
Alongside improvements in well-being, the walks also offer a chance to talk with a diverse group of EECS research colleagues, fostering a sense of belonging and creating opportunities for collaboration, while also providing a chance to learn about stories and cultures from around the globe.
Finding time to step away from the screen and move around is also a challenge in this line of work, so the walk-and-talk sessions offer a valuable opportunity for both.
Walk & Talk sessions are open to all EECS PGR students, research associates, and teaching, research, and administrative staff. Walks generally start (weather depending) on Fridays at 12:00 noon.
Please get in touch with one of the Walk and Talk Committee members to join the mailing list for future Walk and Talk announcements.
The departure point is at 12.00 noon from the QMUL Graduate Centre.
The objectives of this initiative are:
Promote inter-mingling and collaboration
Well-being and Mental Health.
Fights fatigue, improves energy, and fitness.
Sharing stories and cultures from different countries.
Promote attendance and sense of belonging.
