The Black Panther Party for Self Defense was founded in 1966 in Oakland, California, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The group was originally formed in response to police brutality, but they grew to advocate for other issues, such as prison reform and voter registration. They also set up free breakfast and after-school programs, as well as free health clinics for the community. The Party's founding document, the Ten-Point Program, concludes by naming their goals: “We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, and peace.”
