What is Access for All?
In 2019, the Education Foundation for the Valley City Public Schools began providing funding in partnership with The Village Family Service Center to provide school-based behavioral health counseling in each of our schools. A clinical counselor, Katie Youngbauer, is available to all students in each school 4 days of the week. Due to the challenges related to Covid-19, the need for counseling services has grown tremendously. This program provides funds for students attending Valley City Public Schools who are in need of behavioral health counseling. These students mainly receive counseling for anxiety, depression, anger management, adjustment issues/concerns, behavioral concerns due to trauma, and ADHD.
Meet Katie Youngbauer
My name is Katie Youngbauer and this is my third school year with Valley City Public Schools providing individual therapy to students grades K-12. I hae been employed by The Village Family Service Center for almost 5 years and started my counseling career providing Intensive In-Home Family Therapy to families in the Fargo and surrounding areas. I work with students on a variety of struggles such as anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, anger, emotion regulation, and communication. The partnership that Valley City Public Schools and The Village Family Service Center has is truly amazing and has been a great asset for all!
Parent Testimony
"School based services helped us in allowing my daughter the ease of counseling being so accessible. There was not the problem of being on a waiting list for months before we could start making a plan. When I have reached out for counseling services to others it is months before you even have the potential of being seen. Counseling should be no different than going to the doctor for a cold. I think it's important for people to share their struggles (if they feel comfortable) so others know they are not alone.
I have noticed immense changes in my daughter. She has learned and mastered coping skills that I couldn't have taught her. We literally went from her curling up sleeping in her bed excessively depressed to being very energetic and approaching us to talk about her day which she didn't do before. She still has her bad days as does everyone she just now has the tools to cope. As the counseling sessions went on I could see the progression and self esteem starting to grow. I couldn't be happier with the results we experienced. The knowledge and approach Katie had with my daughter was amazing. We didn't just see a change in mood with my daughter but also an immense decrease in migraines. Instead of focusing on the negatives she focuses so much more on the positives."
