About Us

Dr. Carrie Spangler

Welcome to the 2020-2021 unconventional school year. I have over 20 years of experience as a professional in the field of audiology and has a lifetime of personal experience living successfully with hearing loss. Follow my cochlear implant story at hearingspanglish.blog. I love sharing knowledge related to Educational Audiology and have had the opportunity to present locally, nationally, and internationally on topics related to educational audiology. I also have authored several articles and book chapters. Professionally, I have a passion for working with students with hearing challenges at all grade levels while supporting the educational team. I am looking forward to working with all of our districts this year.

One of my roles at Summit ESC is direct service to our TALK program (Teaching Auditory Learning in Kids) which is a listening and spoken language preschool program. I am also passionate about tweens and teens and created the Hit It! program (Hearing Impaired Teens Interacting Together) and campUS overnight program, both support group for tweens/teens with hearing loss. I currently serve as a Governor appointed audiology board member for the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board and the Ohio Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Committee.

When not at work, I am blessed to spend time with my family and friends. My husband, Troy, and I have 2 teenagers who are actively involved in soccer! I also love to work out, walk, and be outside!

Dr. Jessica Hoefler

This is my 5th year with the Summit ESC and, although this year will look VERY different, I can't wait for this adventure to begin! I have loved every minute of my career as an educational audiologist!

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences followed by my clinical Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Akron via the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium (NOAC). During my time at NOAC, I completed multiple rotations throughout the field of audiology including the Cleveland Clinic, Akron Public School District, and the Cleveland Department of Veteran Affairs. Previously, I had been working full-time at a private practice in the Youngstown area.

I am currently the Audiologist-at-Large for the Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition (OSSPEAC) and enjoy advocating for all students with hearing and listening needs as well as the profession of educational audiology in Ohio.

My passion has always been to help individuals with hearing loss. My goal for all students is to ensure not only access to their instruction but also guide them to be successful advocates for their hearing and listening needs. Whether it is teaching them how to use their personal hearing assistive technology or understanding their hearing loss, I love watching my students grow and advocate for themselves in the classroom!

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, family, friends, and running with my dog, Maddie. I have two amazing daughters: Quinn Rose who is a spunky and smart 3.5 year old and Piper Grace who is a gorgeous and fierce Angel in Heaven!

Dr. Lauren Thomas

Welcome to a unique school year. What a ride it will be! The 2020-2021 school year is my 3rd with Summit ESC and I am so excited for this journey to begin!

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from The Ohio State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences and my clinical Doctorate of Audiology from Kent State University via the Northeast Ohio Au.D. Consortium (NOAC). While at NOAC, I was awarded the “Outstanding Clinician in Speech Pathology and Audiology” in 2012 and completed my clinical externship at the Cleveland Clinic. My clinical experiences provided a lot of exposure to pediatric patients and all aspects of audiology.

I have been a practicing audiologist for 7 years. Prior to joining the amazing team at Summit ESC, I worked at a private audiology practice in Youngstown, OH. I worked extensively in diagnostics and hearing aid fittings. It was during this time that I found my love for troubleshooting personal devices and assistive technology. I currently serve as a committee co-chair for OSSPEAC- Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition.

My passion is educating about hearing loss. The causes, the impact (especially in the classroom!), treatment options, and ways accommodations and assistive technology can make a positive improvement. I also enjoy creating fun activities that teach children about their hearing loss and how to self-advocate.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family: my husband- Matt, our 2.5 year-old- Livia, and dog- Franco! I also enjoy cooking, fashion, and interior design.
