Location:
5 foot kickers have been disbursed among each of the Kindergarten and First-Grade classrooms. School based OT does have additional foot kickers for any additional students in need.
Purpose and Benefits:
Sensory foot kickers on students desks allow for heavy work and sensory input throughout the feet and lower body while engageing with academics. Allowing for sensory and motor output for students with these foot kickers increases self and sensory regulation. Utilization of these materials can carry over into academic work by promoting attention, emotional regulation, and increased academic enagement.
Utilization:
Utilize these foot kickers with students who present with increased shifting attention, continuously seeking input (standing, wabbling in their chair, or wandering the room), or who regularly display increased engery throughout school.
Utilize foot kickers with caution. Students who are more likely or continuously abuse the usage of the foot kickers (i.e., falling backwards in their chair, being a continuous disruption in class with their kicker) may need to have limited usage or have privlieges for foot kickers revoked. Safety first.
If rubber tubes for foot kickers wear down or break and are unable to be retied onto desk, please contact the school based OT for support.
Information within this document outlines details of the sensory kits that were disbursed among preschool, kindergarten, first-grade, and SPED classrooms.
