Introduction to Forces

Assessment for learning:

  • KWL charts will provide input that the teacher can use to identify misconceptions and areas of interest for students on this topic.
  • Kahoot! will provide students with immediate feedback about the prerequisite knowledge required for this unit.

Assessment as learning:

  • Students will independently work through free body diagram scenarios before sharing and solving as a class. At this stage, students will determine how their own work differs from the solutions and their peers

Assessment of learning:

  • The sharing of these free body diagrams will show the teacher how well the students have understood the concept of the diagrams.

Newton's First Law

Assessment for learning:

  • The minds-on activity will let the teacher find some misconceptions regarding friction.

Assessment as learning:

  • Students will independently work through the 6 situations in note and assess how their solutions differ from the shared solutions.

Assessment of learning:

  • The teacher will observe the students as they share their solutions to the final three questions to their groups.

Newton's Second Law

Assessment for learning:

  • Use personal white boards to determine how well students comprehend the prerequisite skills of creating a free body diagram.
    • Identify the students who consistently struggle.

Assessment as learning:

  • Students will reflect during the "group" stage of Think-Group-Share and consider their own understanding of identifying and controlling variables.
  • Fist-to-Five encourages students to consider their comfort working with the example.

Assessment of learning:

  • There is no assessment of learning during this lesson.

Objects in Free Fall

Assessment for learning:

  • The teacher will consider student comprehension when they discuss the slinky demonstration and address misconceptions.

Assessment as learning:

  • Students are encouraged to make decisions and work at their own pace to complete the lab.

Assessment of learning:

  • The teacher will collect completed lab work and mark them. Marks are specified for each question in the lab below.
