Mancala is one of the world’s oldest-known games, fostering many different versions of "count and capture" games throughout cultures. Its origins are rooted in ancient Africa and Asia, and evidence suggests it has been played for thousands of years. Earlier versions of Mancala games used primitive tools constructed of wood or clay, or the game boards were carved in stone (UBG, 2020).
Archaeological findings date the game back to at least 1400 BCE, with boards discovered in ancient Egyptian temples in Luxor and Thebes. Its expansion is attributed to trade and cultural exchanges, specifically through Arabian merchants, who helped spread the game to regions like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. The word"Mancala" is derived from the Arabic term naqala, meaning "to move," reflecting its mechanics and game logistics. The image to the right is the mancala board carved in wood. Although it is more commonly played with marble stones today, people would use various placeholders such as rocks and seeds (Mancala Games, 2019).
Throughout the years, Mancala diversified into numerous regional variants, each with unique rules and styles. For example, versions like Oware and Warri are popular in West Africa and the Caribbean, while Omweso is widely played in East Africa. The game's simple design—stones or seeds placed in pits on a board or the ground—made it adaptable to many cultures. Boards have been made from materials varying from wood, clay, and stone to pits dug into the ground, highlighting its widespread appeal and versatility (UBG, 2020).
Mancala was believed to have been brought to the United States along with the enslaved African people throughout history. It became more widely known in the United States during the 20th century, mainly through adaptations like Kalah, introduced in the 1940s. Mancala had limited European influence but was found in some Baltic states and ancient castles. Through the ages, the appeal of mancala has never been forgotten.Kings and commoners have played the simple game, still bringing modern players joy. Mancala is celebrated for its rich history and strategic gameplay (Burgess & Gamble).
