“The thing that many teachers forget is that speaking is the key to have students gain the ability to express themselves and improve communication skills. One of the main purposes of learning a second language is to communicate with different people all around the world. People learn how to speak by interacting with other people. So, it is important to allow students to talk in the classroom.” (Zeynep Türkyılmaz, May 19)
“Students can be shy about speaking. I suppose it is one of the most challenging skills for language learners. When a teacher considers this factor, speaking activities can be applied to lessons more amusingly. In this way, it is important to create a relaxed atmosphere when they speak. (Buse Akgüneş, May 21)
“One cannot learn how to speak without actually practicing it. Therefore, speaking lessons should include as much student talk time as possible. In large classes, having all students included in this student talk time might be hard with only whole-class activities. At this point, pair/group activities may help with engaging everyone in the speaking process.” (Nazlı İrem Meriçli, May 21)
“One of the problems I'm observing is we are trying to teach our students to communicate in a language, but we do not even try to communicate with them! We should give them the idea that in this way, we are together with them no matter what. That's why we are teachers.” (Batuhan Şekeroğlu, May 25)
“I would apply strategy-based Instruction to teach speaking. Knowing communication strategies will help learners participate in conversation with confidence and be involved in large classes. Many Turkish students feel ashamed when they do not remember any word, so using an all-purpose words strategy such as saying “thing or stuff” for the unknown words could save them from feeling down. Stalling or gaining time strategy could also be used when learners need time to organize their speech.” (Emre Sobacı, May 27)
“In my opinion, the common problem for many students learning English as a foreign language is speaking. This problem can have many causes such as shyness, peer pressure, lack of self-confidence, fear of making mistakes. I believe that this problem, which occurs especially in crowded classrooms, can be eliminated by a method well-applied by the teacher. As a teacher in large classes, the first technique that comes to my mind to apply is the six thinking hats technique.” (Sevcan Mercanoğlu, May 27)
“Teaching speaking is more difficult than other skills. Actually, it depends on the students. As a teacher, the mission is to create a comfortable environment for students to speak. Especially in large classes, it is so hard because you have to take care of more students.” (Müzeyyen Sena Güneş, May 30)
An integral facet of being an eloquent communicator in any social setting relies upon active listening and proficient speaking. It should be acknowledged that verbal competence allows the teachers and the students to articulate their thoughts well. As a facilitator, it is imperative to devise activities that provide for the students, the opportunities to inculcate effective speaking skills.” (İrem Çiçekli, May 31)
Sometimes, teachers can discourage students in some way, and it produces an unwanted result that the students become not so confident as they should be. Instead of finding little mistakes and being harsh about their mistakes, we should coax them to speak. Speaking can not be improved unless spoken. (Büşra Erkuşöz, May 31)
