Academic and career pathways in the field of education are complex, requiring you to make lots of decisions about your future. In our department, students can schedule their own appointments to meet with an Education Counselor for a variety of reasons. Some of them include:
Creating or updating your education plan
Child Development Permit advising
Assistance with certificate or degree petitions
Transfer information, including using credits from other colleges
Strategies to help improve academic performance or time management
Just checking in to make sure you are on track to meet your goals!
There are two ways to schedule your appointment.
Option 1 - Log into your Corsair Connect account:
Select "Book a Counseling Appointment" (left-hand margin)
Select "Early Childhood Education" from drop-down menu under Program/Area
Choose a time/counselor that works for you and select the “Reserve Appointment” box
An email confirmation will be sent to your SMC student email account
Option 2 - Call 310-434-8109
Leave a message with your name, student ID, and a return phone number. You will be contacted within 48 hours to schedule an appointment.
All students are asked to please keep their contact information updated in Corsair Connect. You can review and update your information, if needed, using the following steps.
Log into your Corsair Connect
Select the "Enrollment" tab in the upper right corner of the screen
Select "Profile/Preferences" in the left margin
Make appropriate changes on the screen (phone, address, etc.)
Click on "Submit Changes”, located in the bottom left of the screen
You should also make sure that your phone allows blocked/unknown callers at this time. If you are not able to answer at your scheduled appointment time, you will need to reschedule for another time.
All students are invited to enroll in ECE 900 each semester. This is a free, noncredit course that gives you access to on-demand tutoring, mentoring, and other resources, including:
Assistance with your writing
Concept development for assignments
Feedback on assignments and presentations before the due date
Individual and small group tutoring for all sections of EDUC, ECE, and PSYCH 11 courses.
Additionally, students must enroll in ECE 900 to access the Student & Family Resource Center and Textbook Lending Library (see below).
Check the schedule of classes for section information. If the semester has already started, you can request an Add Code for ECE 900 by calling 310-434-8109. Students can access support via an online Canvas course or in-person at the Early Childhood Lab School Campus, in room 203.
Unfortunately, F-1 Visa students are not permitted to enroll in noncredit courses. To access the services offered by this support course, call 310-434-8109 for more information.
Located on the Early Childhood Lab School Campus in Room 202, the SFRC has computer workstations, iPads to borrow (for on-campus use only), printing and photocopying (page limits apply), laminating machines, reserve copies of textbooks, professional teaching journals, teaching reference books, and other educational materials for student use. Students must be enrolled in ECE 900 (see above) to access these materials and resources.
In addition, the SFRC supports campus and community students and parents with a free baby clothing exchange program, a parenting and children’s book lending library, child care resource and referral information, and free parenting and children’s playgroup classes. For hours or more information, call 310-434-8109.
While the majority of our courses use no-cost textbook options, some courses may still have a textbook requirement. For many of these courses, the department may have lending library textbooks that you can check out and use for free, for the duration of you course. If your course uses one of these textbooks, you will be notified by your instructor (via your SMC email account) prior to the first day of class. Students must be enrolled in ECE 900 (see above) to access the lending library. For book pick-up and drop-off hours or more information, call 310-434-8109.
