EdTPA is a summative, subject-specific portfolio-based assessment of teaching performance completed during a preparation program within a clinical field experience. It is designed to assess a candidate's readiness to teach.
The edTPA assessment is composed of three tasks:
Task 1: Planning for Instruction and Assessment
Task 2: Instructing and Engaging Students in Learning
Task 3: Assessing Student Learning
EdTPA is designed to represent a cycle of effective teaching, with student learning at the center. All handbooks share common architecture of the three tasks:
Task 1: Planning includes building content, understanding, supporting learning needs, using knowledge of students, assessment to monitor student learning
Task 2: Instruction includes learning environment, engagement in learning, deepening thinking, and subject-specific pedagogy
Task 3 Assessment includes analysis of student learning, providing feedback, and supporting student use of feedback.
Supporting the link between Tasks 1 and Task 2 is academic language and justifying planning decisions.
Supporting the link between Task 2 and Task 3 is academic language and analyzing teaching.
Supporting the link between Task 3 and Task 1 is academic language and using data to inform instruction.
Candidates are required to submit the same types of materials (sources of evidence) for all subject areas. These include both artifacts and commentaries.
