As new cutting edge technological resources become accessible to the general public, it is essential for primary educational institutions and educators to be knowledgeable with the latest technology trends in order to enhance instruction and produce beneficial learning outcomes for students. It is especially vital for educators to evaluate their institution to ensure that the current technology resources are sufficient with the instructional needs of teachers and the learning needs of students while also determining if any technology disparities are present. The fundamental goal of our group is to distribute a technology needs assessment survey to K-12 teachers at Weslaco ISD in Weslaco, Texas.
The technology needs assessment survey consists of a series of questions designed to determine the attitudes of educators regarding the current technology in place, the technology that is needed, and to determine potential recommendations to address their technology needs at this institution. The survey will be distributed to educators online and will be accessible through the use of the survey platform, Google Forms. Furthermore, this needs assessment survey will provide educators with the opportunity to identify their institution’s technological strengths and weaknesses and contribute to the development of technology initiatives that will address these technological weaknesses and challenges. Participation in this survey will hopefully maximize teaching and student learning in the process.
The target audiences are 21 K-12 teachers from the Weslaco ISD school district, who primarily serve students from Hispanic backgrounds. The teachers teach different subject areas and range in teaching experience and proficiency in using technology. Their ages vary from mid-20s to early 60s. The teachers are familiar with utilizing Google classroom to create and present students with assignments and other learning resources. They have recently been introduced to communication platforms such as Google Meet, Zoom, and other distance learning communication applications to provide remote instructions to students.
The purpose of the Technology Needs Assessment is to determine Weslaco ISD school district's current technology access and usage and identify any areas of improvement, specifically pertaining to educational technology, communication applications, and technological device usage. In addition, the assessment will provide an overview of the attitudes teachers have concerning the current technology in use and whether the teachers feel as though improvements can be made to the technology. The assessment will assist the EdTech Leaders team in creating a recommendation plan for the Weslaco ISD school district.
