Intercity Transport
Introduction
Planning to get out of Lublin to explore Poland or the rest of Europe? Then you should familiarize yourself with the various ways that you can travel out of town. The most frequent ways students travel is through trains and long-distance buses.
Trains
The best way to get around Poland is through trains. The national operator of most intercity trains is PKP Intercity, which connects most major towns to each other. Trains departing from Lublin can be located at the Lublin Railway Station (PL: Lublin Główny).
You are required to have a ticket on you when on public transport. As a simplification, you may obtain a physical ticket or an electronic ticket from an app. Luggage is usually included with the ticket. Below shows you information about each type of ticket:
Physical Tickets: These tickets are available at the train station. You may pay for these tickets using cash or card through staff or the ticket machine.
Electronic Tickets: These tickets can be obtained from your phone, which is extremely convenient. Hence, these tickets are recommended for you to use. The most common app used is Jakdojade, which is available on both the App Store & Play Store. This app can be used to buy tickets and also act as a navigation guide. Your ticket can be used for the single journey you have paid for. Through the app, you may also refund the ticket (at a penalty) or exchange the ticket for a different date/time (must be the same travel route and travel class).
Discounts
Students are entitled to Reduced Fare, which is usually 50% of the Regular Ticket Cost. To take advantage of this, you must possess the Student ID Card given to you by the university when you are on public transport. You may not take advantage of this if you did not bring your Student ID Card with you on your trip. You will only be asked to show your Student ID Card upon a Controller's Request, this information can't be saved in the app.
Fines & Penalties
You may be penalized for failure to possess a ticket on public transport. Inspection on trains are guaranteed. You will incur a financial penalty if you do not have a ticket. The penalty is reduced if you pay immediately to the ticket controller or within a certain amount of days. Failure to pay for the ticket within a given amount of time may cause the operator to take you to court. You will also be asked to leave the vehicle, the ticket controller has the right to temporary detain you and notify police.
You may also be penalized for utilizing the Reduced Fare when you do not have your Student ID Card on you. The consequences are the same as failure to possess a ticket. Therefore, you must possess your Student ID Card at all times.
Long Distance Buses
Long Distance Buses are a convenient option if you want to travel to cities where trains can't reach or if you want to head directly to the Warsaw Chopin Airport without changing trains at the Warsaw Central Railway station. The most common Long Distance Bus company used by English Division students is Flixbus. Long Distance Buses departing from Lublin can be located at the Lublin Station (PL: Dworzec Lublin). You may purchase a ticket through the Flixbus Website. Luggage is usually included with the ticket. Unfortunately, with long distance buses, discounts may be harder to find. Flixbus may offer occasional discounts if you have the ISIC card.
