"Replaceability" And Modern Consumer Society
I was surprised by my disrespect for commodities. Like many parents do, my parents also repeatedly told me the importance of things and appreciation for them. However, after analyzing my consuming habit, I realized that “replaceability” made me forget this moral. I tend to think that if it’s replaceable, there is no reason to feel guilty to throw it away after using it up. This is probably applicable for all consumers in this world. The modern society has forced consumers to buy many and dispose many so that companies can produce and earn more.
However, through this project, I realized the unsustainability of low price and mass production. Like Yiwu’s case, it is no longer possible to produce and procure products if the company is really eager to improve the standard living of staffs.
As many have already realized, the material of production is also endangered. The source of the earth will run out if we continue this consuming habit.
Society that prioritizes low cost and mass production is supported by these great sacrifices that pose threat to our future generation.
A Tip For Future
From this awareness, I would like to share a small suggestion I came up. This is very simple, thinking twice before buying the product. This includes, “Why I want this?”, “Is this really decent price for the product?” or “What kind of people behind this product?”.
It might seem to be small change and self-dependence, however, what really needs to do is to rebuild consuming habit of our own. Hence, self-reflection should be located at the center.
Let’s not forget people behind the low-price product. Since they are the same human like us and clearly the one who enriches our life.
Let’s stop buying products because they are cheap and replaceable. Since the material on the earth is limited and so we or our descendants must pay the price. (319)
