As a public high school, we have a lot of responsibilities when it comes to your education. It isn't enough to teach you basic concepts and skills. It's our job to help prepare you for everything that comes next. Whether that means attending a college, going to a tech school, starting an apprenticeship, entering the workforce, joining the armed forces, taking a gap year...we have to make sure everyone has what it takes to succeed.
A major part of that goal includes teaching our students "soft skills." These are different from "hard skills" like long division or writing an argumentative essay because they aren't necessarily about normal school topics. These "soft skills" cover topics like communication, professionalism, leadership, critical thinking, and more. These are skills that are essential for modern day adults, but which don't always fall into typical classes.
Employers want to see these skills in their future employees. If our students can excel in these skills, then they will have a major advantage over other students seeking the same jobs. That's why this our goal; we want you all to be successful no matter what you do.
If you're a 9th grader or a new student, welcome! This will be your first year with the program. If you are an upperclassman, then this is all review for you. This website, along with google classroom, will have all the stuff you need to learn and apply these skills. Your advisory teacher should have a google classroom for you to join. Your worksheets will be posted there, and the lesson content will be posted here. You can use the "Lessons" tab at the top of the page to find the lessons for each month. There will also be a "quick link" posted at the top of the homepage to take you straight to the current topic. We love shortcuts!
The basic routine is simple: You come to your advisory every Wednesday. In that advisory class, you will have a schedule to follow. You can find the schedule on the "Schedule" tab at the top. Sometimes, you will have SSR (sustained, silent reading). Other days, you'll work on the lesson content. Longer months may also assign a "follow up activity" to complete after the regular lesson to help you apply or practice your skills. All you have to do is follow the schedule as it is posted, complete the worksheets when they are assigned, and turn them in. You'll be rocking in no time!
