This website is designed in support of creating accessible lessons, even for the youngest learners. Accessibility knows no age just as disabilities do not. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a design framework that plans to accommodate all learners before the learners enter the classroom, physically or digitally, and removes potential barriers they may face. Using UDL to design lessons to be accessible ahead of time is beneficial for the students and educator alike. Educators never know what kinds of students they will be interacting with. Utilizing UDL is one way to assure that the content will be accessible to all learners and the learners' needs will be met. It is fundamentally and ethically important to make learning accessible to all which is why the UDL framework is so important to utilize.
The lesson of focus is written to teach letter sounds to kindergarten students, but is appropriate for 4K and first grade students as well. This topic is a basic foundational skill all children need to know in order to understand how letters work together to form words. This lesson is written using the letter M, but this letter can be substituted with any letter of the alphabet. The materials were created to use to teach all 26 letters.
