Our Purpose:
Why?
Both of us faced a lack of representation in the school curriculum throughout our school years and felt the need to change this for upcoming generations.
Coming from two students of which one is primarily interested in STEM and the other in humanities, we found disparities regarding representation for all interests for all students in our curriculum here at our high school.
Our Process (How we started off to where we are heading):
Brainstorm
Connecting our ideas with what fosters a student’s identity + how certain aspects (ex: culture) can affect student’s school performance
Venn Diagram on different schools + their way of teaching students with their curriculum
Looked into representation, cultural responsiveness, and more
Experience
One of us volunteered at our district’s elementary school over the summer to help build skills for elementary students ranging from ages 5-14
Joined the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee at AHS
Part of a subcommittee, the Curriculum committee ➡ help bring student voice into how your school's curriculum can be improved and diversified to encourage students pursue in their academic career
Researching/Writing Our Paper
In the process of writing a research paper compiling personal examples and experiences with data from our school and other schools near us to answer our overarching question of “How School Fosters Student Identity”
Gaining Perspective
Interviewing different schools with different approaches to learning to further understand and filter through different perspectives to achieve our final system/model for learning.
Spreading the Word
Created an Instagram, Youtube account, and a website to propel our goals and future plans/experiences
Our Goals:
We hope to see a change in our school’s curriculum in terms of diversity as well as real-world application in the courses offered.
Through working and understanding other schools’ different approaches to learning, we hope to come up with a system that will represent and include all students and all interests.
We strive to inspire other students to build confidence in their voices and speak up for issues that they feel strongly about as well.
