Feminist geographies

Queering Feminist Geography Collective

I convene a group called Queering Feminist Geography. It is space for dialogue, networking, community building, resource sharing, research, and writing around the place of queer/trans people in feminist geography and geography more generally.

We are a collective of queer, trans, and queer-positive feminists working within and adjacent to geography. We represent a diversity of gender and sexual identities and positionalities and describe ourselves as queer, trans, cis, straight, bisexual, genderqueer, genderfluid, transfemme, and transmasc. Beyond our gender and sexual identities, we describe ourselves as white, BIPOC, working class, disabled, first-gen students, and neurodivergent. Whatever our identities, we are committed to creating, holding, and contributing to a space that centres the experiences and perspectives of queer and trans feminist geographers toward a more inclusive and self-actualised feminist geography.

We meet virtually to work on various projects. Our first phase of work together (Fall 2023) entailed writing four short articles on topics of queer/trans belonging, inclusion and exclusion in feminist geography; feminist transphobia; allyship for queer/trans people; and queer/trans-feminist coalition.

Our second phase of work (Fall 2024) focuses on creating queer-inclusive feminist geography syllabi, queer/feminist zines, and writing reflections on being a queer-feminist collective, and presenting our work at conferences.

Feminist praxis

I'm interested in how we can activate feminist intellectual and political commitments to transform academic cultures. For more on this,

>> Read "Coming of age in a straight white man’s geography: Reflections on positionality and relationality as feminist anti-oppressive praxis."

>> Read my forward "Transforming Geography" to Lindsay Naylor's book "All Geographers Should be Feminist Geographers" (in press, email to request)

Feminist epistemology & theory

I have broad interests in feminist theory and epistemology. I bring feminist epistemology and theory to bear on contemporary debates in geographic theory. For feminist readings and critiques of contemporary currents in geographic theory:

>> Read "Positionality, post-phenomenology, and the politics of theory."

>> Read "Can assemblage think difference? A feminist critique of assemblage geographies."

For influences of feminist thought on geography:

>> Read our chapter "On the subject of performativity: Judith Butler’s influence in geography." (email for access)

>> Read our chapter " Judith Butler” in Key Thinkers in Space and Place. (email for access)

Feminist geography professional community

I'm involved in the professional spaces of feminist geography within the US. I am currently a board member of the Feminist Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. I run our social media accounts, including our Twitter (@feminist_geo) and Instagram (@feministgeographies) accounts. I run a social media series called #MeetAFeministGeographer that profiles feminist geographers to increase the visibility of feminist scholars and the diversity of work happening in feminist geographies.

I also currently serve as book review editor at Gender, Place, and Culture: Journal of Feminist Geography. If you'd like to review a recently published book within or relevant to feminist geography, get in touch!
