To start us off, it’s important to us here at THE EDGE that all members of our team share our vision, our purpose and the philosophy that encompasses everything we do both in and outside of our classes. This is a vision that is shared and demonstrated by the Directors, Teachers and Team Members at our studio and it is the driving force behind every interaction with our students and their families.
Before pulling on those dance shoes, it’s important that all families – whether returning or new complete their enrolment forms so we can ensure we have the most up-to-date contact details for you and ensure you have reviewed the current terms and conditions of enrolment. This information includes you and your child's details, any medical conditions, our waivers, insurances and your payment details [see below links]. Enrolments are completed in person and viewed online through our Parent Portal.

The Edge Dance Centre specialises in teaching the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus (RAD) providing classes from Pre-Primary through to Solo Seal. This syllabus is a highly regarded syllabus recognised around the world.
Whilst exams are not compulsory, we encourage students from Grade 1 upwards, to take 2 Ballet Classes per week to help develop core strength, flexibility and musicality.
We pride ourselves on our 100% pass rate in both Grade and Vocational examinations with over 80% of our students attaining the highest level of Distinction.
The RAD have specific age requirements for each class level. For further information please see HERE or below or visit the RAD website www.rad.org.au
CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL
Contemporary dance is a particularly innovative way of moving the body, blurring the lines between jazz, ballet and Hip Hop. We teach the students to dance in parallel, seamless movement in and out of the ground, contract and release, and fall and recovery – these elements making up the characteristics of contemporary dance. This style encourages self-expression, natural movement and personal interpretation. Lyrical is a melodic and more expressive form of ballet often accompanied by ballad music to which the students can relate.
HIP HOP
Hip Hop is a street style of dance that has become very popular over the last ten years. We see this kind of dancing in music videos from Justin Timberlake, Usher and Beyoncé and also in films such as Step Up and Honey. Our teachers are committed to staying at the forefront of this exciting and constantly evolving genre through regular training and workshops with some of the world’s top choreographers. In class students are taught breakdancing skills as well as basic acrobatic exercises to help strengthen and improve their Hip Hop technique. Our classes also allow the children to learn some popular ‘groove steps’ and give them the opportunity to explore their own unique style – which is loads of fun!
JUMP 'N JIG (Preschool)
This is a high energy, fun Irish class for preschool aged dancers (2-5 years). With music from popular preschool artists combined with traditional Irish tunes, they won’t be able to keep their feet still! They will learn basic Irish dance technique, but most importantly have lots of fun.
JAZZ
Jazz is our most popular style of dance and where we recommend most students start. Classes will contain a mix up of the following; a warm up, corner work (skill progressions which travel across the floor), centre based skill work, flexibility exercises as well as learning a routine. Jazz is a very diverse form of dance influenced by old and new musicals through to modern pop music. Jazz class enhances flexibility, coordination and fitness, but most of all, Jazz is simply great fun, listening to all your favourite pop songs heard on the radio in class. We take pride in keeping all choreography and music choices age appropriate whilst ensuring students are engaged and challenged.
MUSICAL THEATRE
Our musical theatre classes comprise of both singing & acting.
Acting classes will cover performance skills that include:
Self -image, interpretation/comprehension of the written word, improvisation, characterisation, diction, acting for theatre/film techniques, monologues, mime, audition preparation, role playing and grooming/make-up techniques.

The class is thoughtfully structured into three engaging sections: ENGAGE, EXPLORE, and EXPRESS, each catering to different aspects of a toddler's growth and learning journey.
Our move class offers toddlers and their grownup a comprehensive and engaging experience, fostering physical, cognitive, and social development through the power of movement and music.
By engaging in this holistic approach to learning and play, participants not only build essential skills but also cultivate a love for movement and music that can last a lifetime.
Participating in READY SET MOVE with the support of a grown up can make a significant contribution to play, development and learning.
STRETCH & CONDITIONING
Group stretch & Conditioning classes help improve, flexibility, core strength, control and co-ordination.
TAP
Tap dancing was pioneered by greats such as Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, but today with groups like the Tap Dogs, the style has grown to be quite funky. Tap classes offer more than just learning how to move your feet. Some benefits our students gain from participating in these classes are an understanding of timing, rhythm, speed with coordination and strengthening of the legs and ankles. The sense of musicality learned will be of benefit in all other styles of dance as well.
TROUPE & PERFORMANCE CLASSES
For those who want to take their dance training to the next level, we offer these these classes for most age groups in varying styles. These classes are offered to students who show the appropriate level of commitment and work ethic in previous classes. To be eligible, these classes have specific eligibility requirements in regards to the amount of classes and styles that students must do. Team members learn a selection of well-choreographed dances, may perform in different styles and perform at events or competitions/eisteddfods.
Other performance opportunities are also offered to all EDGE students throughout the year; including Granny Smith festival and the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

The opportunity to perform in a concert is an exciting, empowering and confidence-building part of the training process. This is where we love to watch our students learn about the theatre, rehearsals and teamwork while they enjoy the opportunity to showcase their skills in a professionally run production. Concerts are a wonderful way for students to showcase the results of their hard work and for family and friends to join in the pride of their achievement. We love giving all students the chance to perform for their family and friends in this supportive and fun environment and encourage even our youngest and newest performers to be involved.
THE EDGE holds two shows per year:
MID YEAR SHOWCASE This display is an informal relaxed chance for parents, family and friends to see what the students have achieved in Terms 1 and 2. Costuming is not required for this performance as students wear their class uniform. The mid-year showcase is for ALL students aged 2 - 102.
PRESCHOOL END OF YEAR CONCERT [including our Musical Theatre students] This End of Year concert is professional display of dance enhanced by fabulous costumes followed by a special presentation and held at BEECROFT COMMUNITY CENTRE on SUNDAY 16th November.
THE EDGE END OF YEAR CONCERT The End of year concert is a professional display of dance enhanced by amazing costumes, special effects and lighting that is held at the CONCOURSE THEATRE in CHATSWOOD on MONDAY, 24th NOVEMBER @ 7pm.
Detailed concert information is sent out throughout the year detailing everything you need to know. A Concert Performer Fee is charged at the beginning of enrolment for the End of Year Concert and this is outlined in the Concert Information later in the year.
Classes work on their routines for these performances in Term 1 & 2 for the Mid-Year concert and Term 3 & 4 for the End of Year Concert. The students work on these routines each week in class, developing their skills in the process and learning the importance of rehearsal, commitment, performance techniques and teamwork.
COSTUMES
At THE EDGE, most concert costumes are purchased by the students with one costume per dance, except for our preschool students. We use a "lay-by" system to pay off the costumes in Terms 1, 2 & 3, with the remaining balance payable in Term 4. All details are outlined in our Concert Performer handbook.
If participating in local fetes or other community performances, we generally will hire costumes or use class uniforms.
Your child’s attendance in class is very important to their peers and our teaching staff. As a member of our EDC Family, it is a commitment for you to ensure your child attends their classes on time each week and attends all lessons planned for them. Not only do absences impact the concert routines we create, it also impacts the social and confidence-building principals we work hard to foster in each age group.
If you know ahead of time that your child will be absent due to holidays/vacations, commitments or school trips or illness, please let us know ahead of time so the class impact is minimal. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate make-up sessions for students who miss classes for holidays/vacations/personal leave/school events, but we do offer make-up lessons within the term for illness. Refunds will not be issued for any missed classes.
If you wish to withdraw from classes, please see our withdrawal policy here
