Web 2.0 Project - Edmodo

Edmodo is an educational technology company offering a communication, collaboration, and coaching platform to K-12 schools and teachers. Teachers can use Edmodo to connect with their students in numerous ways. Teachers can post assignments, notes, or even instructional videos they made personally or found from online sources. (YouTube, Khan Academy, etc.) Another awesome feature is the poll tool. You can poll your class to check for understanding and it complies the results instantly! Edmodo can be used as an extension to other powerful communication capabilities such as Google or Microsoft. Teachers are able to message their students and the parents through Edmodo as well. The messaging application on the site is used like email. Edmodo also has an app. If the student or parent has the app, they will get an immediate notification when the teacher posts in the class or sends a message.

My Edmodo

Edmodo is a great tool for classroom teachers. I am able to connect with my students in many ways. I use Edmodo to assign my students quizzes, take polls, and post videos for them to watch. The students are able to connect with me and each other. In a sense, Edmodo is very similar to Facebook. If they need help on a homework assignment, they are able to contact me or someone else in the class. I can also assign my students bell ringers to do as soon as they enter the classroom. All they have to do is answer the question and hit Reply. By utilizing bell ringers, quizzes, videos, the students are 100% involved and active. Check out my Edmodo classroom here!

Not only can teachers create tests and quizzes directly through Edmodo, they can also create quizzes on Google and share the quiz with the students via Edmodo. I use Google Classroom as well as Edmodo. I love how I am able to use them together to keep my students active. The following is a quiz with all of the terms my students need to know to for their next test. In geometry, terminology is vital. If students do not know terms and definitions, they will not be able to work the problems. By using Google Forms and Edmodo, I was able to give my students the test without using paper and not having to grade anything! View my example quiz here.

Pros/Cons

Edmodo is a great tool but, if a school uses Google Classroom their is no need for Edmodo. With Google Classroom, everything is intertwined. For example, mail, classroom, docs, sheets, surveys, websites, etc. My school uses Google Classroom; therefore, it is better for me just to use Google rather than Edmodo. If a school does not have Google Classroom, then Edmodo is a great tool for teachers to use in the classroom and as a form of communication.

Reflection

Edmodo provides teachers with endless possibilities for their classrooms! Teachers can create assignments, quizzes, notes, polls, and so much more. Using polls as exit slips is a great way to keep students active in your classroom. Student feedback is very important in today’s education world. Teachers can post links to YouTube and other sites on their Edmodo. One way I keep my students active is by posting YouTube videos as an assignment, so they can watch the videos the night before class so they will already be prepared for that day’s lesson.

Utilizing Edmodo by having a classroom page and providing them with a way to connect to each other and myself shows my ability to model and facilitate innovative digital-age work and learning experiences through the effective use of current and emerging tools to ensure success in a global and digital world whereby the teacher and learner locate, analyze, evaluate, manage, and report information as well as communicate and collaborate online fluently using a variety of technology-based media formats.

I mainly use Edmodo to assign quizzes and to take polls. This provides me with instant feedback by a click of a button. This shows my ability to facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity by providing a variety of learning environments that foster collaboration and innovative thinking to solve real world issues and authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
