Theme: Ecosystem Restoration

The living world survive because of vibrant ecosystems around them wherever they are. Healthy ecosystems which sustains biodiversity and counteract climate change enhance people’s livelihoods. Sadly the overexploitation of natural resources both material and living has pushed this plant to a dangerous arena of potential annihilation. Against this impending peril the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore them to achieve the sustainable development goals. It offers unparalleled opportunity for job creation, food security and addressing climate change.

The main event of World Environment Day 20201 is the launching of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

IIT Guwahati in solidarity with the global community for the common good of humanity and this planet is celebrating WED 2021 though various activities like organizing Keynote Lectures, Brain Storming Session cum Panel Discussion on "Ecosystem Restoration: The Way Ahead" by eminent scientists and ecologists.

There will be "Ecotalks" on diverse topics and Group Discussion on “Environmental problems of Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and probable solutions" for young researchers and scholars.

As an individual you can also participate in the photography competition by sending in your original photograph in tune with the theme of the event, more details of which are available in the website.

We welcome you to be a part of the global team for restoring and building a sustainable ecosystem for our future generation. Every small contribution matters. “Plant a Tree” is another event whereby you can plant a sapling in your premises or any suitable place following COVID-19 safety protocols strictly. This is a time to stay safe by not mingling with people or do any activities in a group. Every life is very precious and contagious Covid-19 is truly dangerous. Let us pledge to nurture the planted tree, document it regularly and after 10 years retrospect and visualize our the contribution towards greening of this world.

The inaugural ceremony would be held at 9:00 AM IST and the Valedictory will be held at 5.30 PM. A detailed programme is available in this website.
