Our Stories
At Econ Icon, we believe economics is not simply graphs and GDP; it is a way of viewing the world. This is why we publish articles that help simplify economics and can show a connection to people's everyday lives. Making economics as clear, accessible, and engaging as possible for students of all levels (whether they are just beginning or already engaged because of a love for economics) is our aim. Every article is between about 300 and 600 words, short enough not to lose our audience, while also ensuring that we can explain key ideas about economics in a simple followable manner. While not aiming for any jargon, we prioritize clarity because we believe good economics writing should make you think, not confuse you. Our articles look at a variety of topics, including a variety of articles on inflation and recessions, other articles on how markets work in the real world, and others, but in every article we take economics out of the textbooks and into the real world. Giving people the ability to think and understand economics beyond a theory in a classroom and showing the facts about how economics impacts people every day.
However, Econ Icon isn't just about pure economics. We also discuss how economics interacts with other disciplines, including law, politics, environmental studies, technology, health, education, ethics, and social behaviour. For example, we have published pieces that talk about how economic policy drives legal reform, how climate change is connected to government spending, and how an economic model determines the structure of public health systems. These cross-discipline articles demonstrate to the reader that economics does not operate in a vacuum, but it is attached to a system that ultimately shapes society. Our writers come from different schools, backgrounds, and interest areas, which allows us to present new and interesting angles of approach to these topics. Whether it is an article on wildlife ethics, technological disruption, or economic justice - the goal of each article is to inspire curiosity and broaden understanding. Ultimately, we want to make economics something everyone can relate to - whether you care about sustainability, human rights, global politics or innovation. Because if the students, or the readers of the articles, can engage with the economics behind some extraordinary issues they might just make a difference in being able to tackle them.
