If you want extensive particle capture for a Mazda with a robust HVAC support system, choose ECOGARD XC10189; if you need precise fitment for modern Hyundai and Kia models with a slim profile, choose RigsNParts CF12820.
• ECOGARD XC10189: Delivers superior filtration up to 99.5% of airborne particles but comes in a slightly larger, heavier unit designed specifically for Mazda vehicles.
• RigsNParts CF12820: Offers an efficient 98% filtration rate with a very thin 1.1-inch depth ideal for tight engine bays, targeting a wide range of recent Hyundai and Kia models.
• The Verdict: Buy the ECOGARD for older Mazda drivers prioritizing maximum air purity and blower protection, or grab the RigsNParts for owners of 2020+ Korean vehicles needing a direct, compact replacement.
The ECOGARD XC10189 is built for the driver who refuses to compromise on the quality of air circulating inside their vehicle. Its primary design philosophy centers on "extensive particle capture," boasting a specification that filters up to 99.5% of dust, pollen, air pollution, and pet dander. If you live in an area with high pollen counts or deal with significant road dust, this filter's higher efficiency rating stands out immediately against standard options. It isn't just about keeping debris out; it is about creating a cleaner cabin environment for everyone on board, from children to allergy sufferers.
Beyond raw filtration numbers, this unit is engineered to support the overall health of your vehicle's heating and cooling system. By promoting steady airflow through the HVAC components, it helps reduce strain on the blower motor. This is a crucial detail for anyone who has experienced weak airflow when the fan is turned up to max. The ECOGARD XC10189 aims to prevent that issue by maintaining consistent pressure, ensuring your defroster works quickly in winter and your A/C cools efficiently in summer. It replaces several other common part numbers like the FRAM CF11811 and ACDelco CF3346, making it a versatile drop-in solution for the specific compatibility list provided.
This product is explicitly designed for Mazda owners. You will find it fits the CX-5 (2014-2025), the Mazda 3 (2014-2018), the Mazda 6 (2014-2021), and various other models within that ecosystem. However, its dimensions are substantial. At 2.3 inches thick, 11.3 inches long, and 10.6 inches wide, it is a bulky component compared to some slimmer competitors. If you have a Mazda and prioritize the highest possible filtration percentage and long-term HVAC system health, this is the pick for you. Conversely, if you drive a non-Mazda vehicle or need a filter that fits into an extremely shallow slot, this unit is not for you.

The RigsNParts CF12820 takes a different approach, focusing heavily on compatibility with the latest wave of Korean automotive designs. Its target audience includes owners of newer Hyundai and Kia models, such as the Elantra N, Tucson, K5, Sorento, and even the electric Ioniq series. The standout feature here is the physical design. Measuring only 1.1 inches in thickness, 9.8 inches in length, and 8.2 inches in width, it is significantly more compact than the ECOGARD alternative. This slim profile is essential for modern vehicles where space behind the glove box or under the hood is at a premium. It slides into place without forcing the cover shut, which can be a nightmare with thicker aftermarket parts.
In terms of performance, this filter claims to absorb and filter 98% of dust, smoke, and other pollutants while also helping to eliminate unpleasant odors. While the 98% figure is marginally lower than the 99.5% claim of the competitor, it still represents a high standard of cleanliness for daily driving. The construction utilizes filter cloth rich in high-quality materials, suggesting durability and effective absorption capabilities. The installation process is highlighted as straightforward: simply remove the old cover, take out the dirty filter, slide in the new one, and close it. This ease of use appeals to DIYers who want a quick swap without dealing with complex fitting issues or compressed packaging that might make insertion difficult.
Who should buy this? If you drive a 2021 Hyundai Elantra, a 2023 Kia Sportage, or a 2024 Genesis GV60, this is likely your exact match. It covers a massive array of recent models, including hybrid and electric variants like the Niro EV and Ioniq 5. However, if you drive a Mazda or a vehicle outside this specific Korean brand lineup, this filter will not fit. Additionally, if your priority is squeezing every fraction of a percent out of particle capture above 98%, you might look elsewhere. But for the vast majority of drivers seeking a reliable, easy-to-install replacement for these specific modern cars, the RigsNParts CF12820 hits the sweet spot between size, fit, and function.
• Filtration Efficiency: Choose ECOGARD XC10189 if you need the highest reported capture rate (99.5%) for allergies and heavy pollution; choose RigsNParts CF12820 for a solid 98% capture that handles dust and smoke well.
• Vehicle Compatibility: Choose ECOGARD exclusively for Mazda models (CX-5, 3, 6); choose RigsNParts for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models from 2020 onwards.
• Physical Dimensions: Choose RigsNParts CF12820 if you have limited space in the filter housing (1.1" thickness); choose ECOGARD if you have ample room and want a deeper filter bed (2.3" thickness).
• HVAC System Support: Choose ECOGARD XC10189 if you are concerned about blower motor strain and want steady airflow promotion; choose RigsNParts for standard maintenance on newer systems.
• Odor Control: Choose RigsNParts CF12820 if eliminating unpleasant odors is a stated priority alongside particulate filtering.
• Installation Simplicity: Both are user-friendly, but RigsNParts emphasizes its slim, drop-in nature for easier handling in tight compartments.
• Replacement History: Choose ECOGARD if you need to replace multiple legacy part numbers (FRAM, Baldwin, etc.); choose RigsNParts for a direct OEM-style fit on modern platforms.
• Garage Storage Needs: For garage storage of spare filters, the RigsNParts is easier to stack due to its smaller footprint, while the ECOGARD requires more dedicated shelf space.
I would buy the RigsNParts CF12820 if my vehicle was a modern Hyundai or Kia, primarily because the 1.1-inch thickness solves the most common pain point with cabin filters: the struggle to force a thick unit back into a tight housing. In my opinion, the convenience of a perfect fit outweighs the marginal difference in filtration percentage for most drivers. However, if I were driving a Mazda, I would immediately switch to the ECOGARD XC10189 because its 99.5% capture rate and focus on reducing blower strain align perfectly with maintaining the longevity of that specific car's climate system. Ultimately, the right choice depends entirely on your make and model, but for general garage storage and versatility among newer imports, the RigsNParts offers a sleek, practical solution.
You should look at the RigsNParts CF12820 for Hyundai compatibility.
While the ECOGARD lists a 99.5% capture rate and the RigsNParts lists 98%, both figures represent high levels of efficiency. The RigsNParts compensates with odor elimination features and a design optimized for modern vehicle intake slots.
You must check your vehicle's year and make. If you drive a Mazda, you need the ECOGARD. If you drive a 2020+ Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis, the RigsNParts is the intended replacement.
Both units come in sealed packaging suitable for storage, but the RigsNParts is physically smaller (8.2 x 9.8 x 1.1 inches) and may be easier to store in a crowded toolbox or shelf compared to the larger ECOGARD unit.
