Select a junior or senior Elon College Fellow in your major (if possible) and interview them about their experience finding a mentor, working with their mentor, and the research process. You can find name and emails of ECFellows on the general ECF Moodle site.
Select three faculty members in your department or program and speak with them informally about their research, past students’ research, and their availability to take on new students either next semester or next fall.
Stuff to ask potential mentors:
area of research faculty engages in
past experience mentoring students and specifically fellows
expectations of student researchers
possible projects that might be available to new students
availability for taking new students - be specific with study abroad plans, Lumen applications, etc.
Make an appointment with Shannon to discuss progress on finding a mentor, if you are having trouble.
Make an appointment with a potential mentor (may or may not be one of the original 3) for a more involved discussion. Request a research paper that your mentor has written or one that is closely related to their research.
Read and analyze the research article from the potential mentor.
