Elegantia College
The Department of English
Dear visitors, welcome to our homepage. Elegantia’s English Department, as a progressive team, has been upholding our "Elegantian" approach to the teaching and learning of English, which is highly recognized and supported by parents and students. Since our establishment in 2002, we have been treating English as a cross-discipline subject and viewing the language as a language of “life” which is used in daily-life situations, including both school and home settings. Our vision points to the acquisition of English learning skills, the application of English in education and the appreciation of English cultures and language arts, all of which are initiated in junior forms for long-term achievements in senior years. Our stress on the “cross-discipline approach”, the training of basic English learning skills, including note-taking, pre-viewing, phonics, and dictionary skills, and the shaping of reading habits through our established English morning reading sessions and the Extensive Reading Award Scheme has generated fruitful results. The cross-discipline approach of the English Department is interpreted in a long-term perspective and corresponds with the fine-tuning policy of medium of instruction. Our long- established EMI bridging projects on a departmental basis throughout junior forms since 2002 witness their own strengths and the awareness of the importance and practical value of the language cultivated within our junior formers. Besides, these department-based designs are conducive to the integration of English in the junior EMI subjects, including Mathematics, Integrated Science, Geography, Computer Studies, Home Economics and Music though they have their own curriculum and syllabuses to follow. We believe the cross-discipline approach will keep generating positive effects on students' awareness of the position and role of English and its importance in their learning as a whole for a lifetime.
“Loving a language means loving its culture.” We emphasize students' appreciation of the English language and language arts, including poetry reading and English drama in junior forms’ English teaching syllabus as part of essential preparation for bridging the New Senior Secondary School Curriculum. Students’ appreciation of English cultures is well justified in our English experiential activities, such as study tours, and summer immersion programmes. Student leaders with a high proficiency level have also joined our English Editorial Board for the making of the official English newsletter, “Elegantianism”.
